Collet die problems

You see where the top tapered part of your collet is black and worn? Thats where all the wear occures. Chuck the collet in a drill press and polish the taper with 300 or finer grit paper to a mirror finish. Polish the opposite piece that the collet rides in as well. When you reassemble put a bit of grease on the tapered collet. You collet die will perform smooth as silk.
BTW. The collet shouldnt touch the brass neck at all until you are at the very end of the press stroke.

that is what I have now learned. what kind of grease do you recommend?

The slippery kind. :) I used regular high pressure moly grease for my trucks universals etc. It never comes in contact with the brass so i think any kind will do.

Rarely. A bit of lube on the coned surfaces, and problem solved. If the system is running dry, you can feel it, and apply a dab of lubricant.

thanks for the link, I never figured they had a video on their site :)

This is pretty much how I set it up tho. Has anyone else had their collet bind like I seem to and have to be opened up?

The neck of your chamber may be on the large side, combined with a slightly binding collet, and thick brass... this combo may cause your problem.

Crushed necks

I have a set of brass just like the ones you have illustrated...

In my case I had mixed, Norma and Lapua brass. After I sized a softer Norma brass the next lapua brass would get crushed, the problem was compressing the collet too much when I resized the softer Norma brass, ie it was set too far. I backed it off a bit, and used lithium grease on the outer size of the collet. I also had to take the die apart to allow the collet to spring back.
