Hello fellow GunNutz!
I have just received a gift from a very close friends father. He gave me a couple of old exposed hammer SXS', double trigger shotguns and I am hoping someone can help me identify the model #'s and year of production. These were given to him by his mothers second husband who was an avid hunter. They have been in his family for a few generations. Very nice pieces that I intend to find more info on for both myself and my friend and his father. Both of their wives do not want them having or displaying them so they have been given to me to appreciate
First up is a Colt 12 ga SXS marked Colts Pt FA Mfg Co. From what research I have done. I am hoping it is a model 1878 (Colts first double barrel shotgun apparently), possibly even a model 1883. All numbers match and the serial is 5016. I have looked into information posted online by Colt but the table is showing multiple serials for the same models within certain years of production. Anyone know of a good source for further ID or possibly someone with knowledge of these old shotguns?
Also received a .410 SXS manufactured by LPG of Belgium and apparently imported by a company in Montreal. It is marked simply THE LPG and the serial # is not legible though there are numerous markings under the barrels where it locks into the receiver.
There are 2 ovals on either side of the catches, with ELG (E on top L on the left and G on the right with a star beneath on the inside if the oval. Above the oval is a crown.
Thee are also 4 ornate 3's engraved in a square arrangement
I also see 2 diamond shapes with 12M over a C inside these diamond shapes just above each of the oval stamps.
And the last two marks I can make out are 10.4 and on the rib in between the top of the barrels it is marked 'The LP.G Imitation Twist Guaranteed Government Test'
Very cool old pieces that I am extremely curious about and would like to keep them in collection to pass on to my son or daughter in the future. Any ideas based on these markings or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I will try to email Colt regarding the 12 gauge but any help would be great
Also the receiver and both barrels towards the receiver have developed substantial rust that I would like to remove without damaging the steel below. Any thought?
Cheers
Adam
