I had a friend drop by last night with a surprise for me. He brought over a 1851 Colt Navy. As far as I can tell it's never been altered. Serial numbers match and overall nice shape considering its 165 years old. Did a quick search with its serial number and it looks to be manufactured in 1855.
What would be an approximate value of this Colt? Give or take of course.
Would you use it? Or would you keep it as is?
Personally me I'd try firing it but it's not mine. I really couldn't give him sound advice on the Colt. I have zero experience with black powder or antique revolvers.
Advice is appreciated.

If it is mechanically sound, shooting it isn't going to harm it as long as it is properly cleaned after use.
Don't know why the trigger guard is bent above the trigger.

I don't know what has been done to the pistol. Wondering if it might not have been worked over at some time. The screws look very crisp, although something is wrong where the trigger guard and backstrap connect. Looks to be the head of a hardware store screw protruding.

all those screws should be flush, bottom of grip and bottom of trigger guard - I think the 2 on the frame are replacements too.

If I had to guess the trigger guard, strap and grips are modern replacements and the trigger guard had to be bent to make it fit.

best guess I got from the pics.

I appreciate the input.
It's quite possible it's been repaired. The work must have been done long ago. It has an aged patina to it.
This is the only one I have handle. I'll bring it to this weekends local gunshow. Hopefully I'll have something to compare to.
Thanks
