I’m looking for a hand/strut spring for a Colt 1878 revolver. Numrich has no stock. I really gotta start making my own springs…..

Pretty much any hand spring will work, open the pinch groove in the hand and re-crimp the new spring. If you dont have a proper spring , I have used a small piece of packing strap steel, (cut it with a Dremel, takes a minute or two) it has a bit of temper to it and a hand doesnt need much spring pressure to push it into engagement

I have used the same method but used the paper folder spring clamps. I used a pair of wide jaw vice grips to cover the metal I didn’t want to cut and used it as a cutting guide/heat sink so the spring metal wouldn’t overheat.

That would be the case for most hand springs. This one also acts as the hammer strut spring and wraps around the Hammer strut. I think I’ll try and make one today.

Well, I successfully made a spring and got the old gun running again. I made it out of steel banding, then hardened it, then tempered it. If I knew how to post pics here, I would. Kinda funny that I can tear apart a Colt 1878, make a spring, and put it all back together….and can’t figure out how to post pics in this forum, ha ha! Have a great Sunday everyone. I’m pretty happy to have this gun back together.
