Hello all,
First of all I am sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but I searched and couldn't find much about what I am asking. So please bare with me.

I am fairly new to the pistol shooting community and am in market for a center fire semi-auto, and have recently come across a Colt 1911 series 80 in 9mm. Now I have only shot the 1911 in 45acp before and know very little about the 9mm colts. I have heard a variety of things about them including they are rare, they are great, the series 80 are problematic, they are jam machines, etc..etc..lots of conflicting data. I wonder if you folks out there with more knowledge than me on these pistols could help me out with some info.

Are these reliable pistols or are they really problem plagued/jam prone? Are they actually rare in this caliber? Are they difficult to get parts for? etc..etc. The pistol comes with a set of pachmyre grips (which I have on my revolvers and really like) and I believe one extra magazine. I would rate its condition at about 9-9.5/10, almost new looking so what would be a reasonable price? (unsure what they would have gone for new)

I know the former owner and have another one of their handguns so I am confident it was greatly cared for and from all accounts not fired much. They said they never had any issues with the gun. I know they are selling it because they no longer shoot pistol (a little older, and just wants to hunt now).

Any info you could provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

I have owned one of these for several years.
Purchased from another member here. Other than having to replace the ejector I have had zero issues with the gun.
I used the pistol for the TDSA AP1 (Texas Defensive Shooting Academy Advanced Pistol 1) course. 1000 rounds downrange in one day.
1 stovepipe all that day.
All I can say is that you can't go wrong with a nice Colt. Whether it is rare or not I really can't say. But; I believe the pistol will perform and hold its value over time

I've easily owned > 100 different 1911 pistols in ~ 30 years of 1911 interest. Including a Colt Series 80 in 9mm. That was purchased new circa 1995 from a dealer in Alberta no longer in business. That dealer had several in stock at the time & was blowing them out for $550 each. So, no I don't believe that particular Colt 1911 is all that rare.

I owned that particular pistol for a number of years & although it shot satisfactorily a vintage Star Model B I also owned at the time shot circles around it. IMHO the Series 80 Colt 1911's [or any with the firing pin block safety junk in them] are the least desirable of all the Colt 1911's.

I still have a Colt 1911 in 9mm but it's a Combat Commander and pre Series 80. I much prefer it to the former.
