I have a Colt SAA built in 1902. It's in great shape for a shooter. Being marked .38 WCF, would it handle modern 38-40 ammo? Or should be used with a BP load? I've had it for 10 years, never shot it.

The steel was changed up at the very end of he 1800s, it should be fine with smokeless (as long as there is no other issues). Colt "verified proof" their first smokeless guns and marked them with a little VP on the trigger guard, starting around 1901. Does yours have this Mark?

Thanks for the info. The .38 (1902) doesn't have the VP. I checked my .32 cal, a 1905 gun, it has the marking. Maybe should use BP substitute stuff in the .38.
