Colt .45 Gold Cup, needs new frame.

I have a Colt .45 Gold Cup, that I bought new more than 30 years ago. I used it for several years shooting IPSC. I have 10's of thousands of rounds through it.

It has a crack in the frame, and a small piece missing. The crack is getting larger, and I no longer shoot the pistol.

I would like to replace the frame, and slide all the other bits onto the new frame.

I don't know where to begin to locate a new frame, or if this is even the best route.

Any suggestions on how best to resolve this?
 
A cracked slide must always be replaced, sometimes depending on where your frame is cracked it may be repairable, any pics?
 
After many thousands of rounds have gone down the pipe and caused the frame to crack.
It's no too hard to imagine that the rest of the gun's parts will also have heavy wear.

Maybe its time to simply retire it, giving it a place of honour in your gun-room.

It is not as simple as simply sliding all the old bits into a new frame. The individual parts are fitted to the frame, and to each others relationship as fitted. Often, for example, the pin holes may have small variations which are compensated for by fitting of the part.

If you can fix the frame then you could get the rest of the pistol nickel plated and then hand fit all the parts.
Voila new gun again ready thousands of rounds again. May need another barrel though.
 
It could be welded depending on where the crack is. Would also make an interesting parts gun.
I would contact colt and see what their warranty is... You never know! I have got warranty replacement on some surprising things.
All else fails you can buy a new frame, use it as a parts gun or hang it on the wall.
I would be interested ;)
 
Where did it crack? Series '70 and '80 were known for cracks at a couple of locations so you can start by contacting Colt and see if they would restore the gun.
 
I bought this gun in 1982, I don't think Colt is going to be very interested.

So where can I buy a new frame? Norinco? Any reason to stay with Colt? It's just a shooter, lots of holster wear, been reblued a couple of times. I just want to keep shooting it.

Maybe contact Dlask. He's pretty much a 1911 guru from what I understand. He can likely fit your components to one of his frames and you get a good to go gun which has been correctly fitted.
 
I think Gold Cup frames are slightly different than other 1911's....trigger width being the one that comes to mind but having said that, yeah why not just by another frame and have a 'smith fit the rest if you want? I think Sean at Freedon has STI single stack frames.....

told me to send it and they made me a new one with the same number as a replacement
