I have a 49 Colt, built in 1852. It has nice ivory grips, but came with the walnut grip as well. Both sets are factory fit and finish, and numbered. Did the original owner send the gun back to Colt to get ivory and kept the woodies, or was it common to end up with both?
I've had the gun for a few years, still curious. Thanks.

Have a similar Colt-cased with usual bits and pieces that also came with what look like ivory grips installed along with original walnut grips. Seller thought the grips were antler rather than ivory and I did not disavow him of that idea altho they sure look like ivory to me. Believe these pieces mainly, unless special ordered, came off the line walnut equipped then retro with ivory as customer orders came in. Unusually my case is French style rather than the squared off compartments normally found. Cheers,

Sounds much the same! A pic maybe? Make a "Look at the 49ers thread."

oldiron,

The only way to know for sure is with a factory letter from Colt. Unfortunately the letters are pricy and the records are not available for all Model 1849’s. I have a 1849 with ivories from 1858. The records are available for one with a serial number that is about 100 off from mine, but not for mine.

You can call Colt and they will tell you if records are available for yours.

wr.sainsbury ,

Like a lot of engraved antique guns, mine is unsigned by the engraver. I am pretty sure mine was engraved by Gustave Young.

Does anyone know if Colt will provide a letter for a London manufactured Model 1849 cased revolver---mfg'd in 1854. They supposedly produced 3,000 cased 49 Colt Pocket Revolvers.

Colt's London factory opened in 1853 and closed in 1857 but the London Agency, operating as a sales office, remained until 1912.

I am wondering if the Colt letters are only available for the U.S. (percussion) manufactured Colts.

I called Colt Archive Services today and they are closed until January third.

All London manufactured revolvers were required by the British Government to be proof fired and stamped on alternate chambers of the cylinder with Crown over GP and Crown over V. Also the barrel was proof marked with both stamps stacked on top of each other on the left side of the barrel lug.

I called Colt Archive Services today (Jan 3 2017) and they do not have records for London Colts.
