With my C8 project getting close to completion I am now seriously considering a Colt 609 build. I have the proper upper, a CH marked A1 style upper with the forward assist but no case deflector. I am thinking about importing a NoDak Spud partial fence lower, any one had any experience with their products? Original 609's had a 4.5" "Moderator" flash hider/suppressor. I would have to get a solid copy of one of these built and am toying with the idea of carrying the barrel forward an extra inch or 2 into the faux Moderator to make it more reliable. These guns were supposedly known to not be very reliable with a 10 inch barrel and a carbine length gas system. This is what I am trying to replicate.

Any thoughts and ideas are welcomed!

I am building an XM 177E2 and looking to get a NoDak lower as well once they have some ready. I contacted Profit River and they will handle the importing through their US FFL.

My barrel is the current govt profile but I can live with it. I would also like to get a closer to the real looking muzzle device but the one I have will do for now.

I have fired this upper from the lower I have on my 14.5 and it worked well with no stoppages or hiccups. I also cut off the bayonet stud to conform to the original.

Yeah it should be a full fence A1 lower. The damn things sell out immediately at NoDak and there is a long wait time until they crank out new ones.

So you are wanting the NoDak just for the XM grey coloring? I see they have some partial fence blemish lowers in stock, may snag a couple to see what the blems look like.

Not just for the colouring. The profile at the pivot pin and at the rear where the receiver extension screws in is different than the A2 lower. If I could get a blem I would jump on it, but they are sold out as well.

8 ball. I had a bunch of fake moderators made a few years ago from actual XM177 drawings, they may still be floating around. Mine sucked for reliability until I put a full auto carrier in along with a H buffer. Problem went away. 10" barrel timing is a #####.

Mine jammed every round with an H buffer and FA carrier.

Replacing the 40 year old extractor spring cured it. :ar15:

I found some drawings off the net that are supposed to be based off an original. This is what I will be having the faux moderator built from. The reliability issue is why I was considering the option of extending the barrel a couple inches into the moderator. But I have to admit the side of me that likes a challenge is betting that I can make a 10 incher run if I play with it a bit! Decisions! You would think that if there was 2000 and some of them built originally that it can't be too hard to make one run. Although the moderator would likely have helped some with backpressure. I can make a 10.5 run ok, logically a half inch can't make that big a difference, can it?

Having a devil of a time finding some of the parts for this build. If anyone can point me in the right direction for any of the following it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Flat style delta ring. Like on a Colt SP1 and similar.
.625 diameter front sight block. Again like on a Colt SP1.
Old style grip without the front finger bump.
Aluminum butt stock.
2 position milspec buffer tube.

Thanks!

Interesting picture I came across doing some research. The left 2 firearms are Colt 609's still in use in 1992!

Thanks Rebel Rouser! I actually have a faux moderator inbound, as well as a few other goodies. I don't know yet what exactly it is, will post some detailed pics when they show up. I'm going to have to get to work getting the lower, I have most of the other parts on the way except the .625 front sight tower and the barrel which I will likely just have to get custom built. Probably go to ATRS or Dlask for the barrel.

Having a fake moderator inbound will likely solve the dilemma of whether to lengthen the barrel into the moderator or not. I'm assuming it's designed to just thread onto a 10 inch barrel, so will most likely go that route.
