I recently purchased a colt AR-15 and i'm wondering how to find out more about it. I tried to look up the serial number but came up with nothing.

Colt Sporter Competition HBAR
ser. ch 005320.

Any info would be great. I can't find anything from google. I'm new to ARs so i'm just curious about overall quality, year it was made and so on.

Colt Ar-15's = quality. Period. Don't worry about that.

As far as when it was made, I bet you could email Colt and ask.

No I actually bought it from General Gun and Supply in Windsor ont. It was the owners brothers rifle. It has lots of room for upgrades. No sights old style non collapsible stock, no front rails. Going to be fun upgrading this baby. I'll take pics.

Sweet. The HBAR at Gobles was $1500 and had a 3X9 scope on it, iirc. I really like the 20" barrel, felt and looked a lot better than the CQ-A too.

Let's see some pics!

Here we go, the piece of paper taped on the stock is bullet weight specs for the rifle. Its like having the Coles Notes.

Here's a pic of the Model and Make. There are a few cuts and scrapes so i was thinking of doing something from arma-coat to bring it back to new. Haven't decided yet.

I couldn't find anything on the upper, the only thing on the barrel was C MP (the m and p are joined as one and 5.56 NATO 1/7. I noticed before I bought it that it was different colour but nobody knew what it was.

Whole lot of aftermarket on that gun, have a peek and see if that upper and barrel are Colt, that gas block and brake definitely not OEM Colts...

You're right... also the color/finishes don't match. I had a Competition H-Bar back in the 1990's and it had a 20" barrel and long (standard) handguard. Not sure if they (Colt) had a 16" barreled version.

Yes, the Competition should have a 20 inch heavy barrel, standard FH, and if I'm not mistaken an A2 upper (the later ones were I think made with flat top uppers) but someone who would know better will be along shortly, I'm sure.

Can't say if that's is a Colt upper but it doesn't belong to the lower. The flat top upper with the stepped barrel should go with a push pin lower and not a screwed lower. The upper if it's a Colt, should be with an LE lower. That would be my take on it.

There were a few models of "competition" HBAR.

R6700 20 inch bbl, 1/7 twist unchromed flat top
R6700CH Range Select (this receiver I think) 20 inch bbl, 1/7 twist unchromed, flat top w 3x9 scope
R6701 20 inch bbl, 1/7 twist chromed flat top with ARMS scope mount

There were some later ones too, including another in the CH range

MT6700 CH with an unchromed 1/9 barrel, choate stock, and hogue pistol grip.

I think yours was earlier, since Competition serial numbers CH0195000 and lower were "pre ban" - before 1994.

After 1994 the serial number prefix would be CCH

Colt Manufacturing has a historian. I don't know if they charge for the service, but they can give you more details.

Colt 6700

Frankenstein gun, made up of after market non Colt parts or Colt parts not intended for the 6700 series, wrong barrel, that appeares from a Colt 6920 carbine, aftermarket gas block, no FSB, missing removable carry handle and/ or (3X9 Tasco rubber armored scope) and 20 in. 1/9 barrel, mix and matches, swapped parts always significantly lower the value of a rifle and one should do the research first to see what it originally was before jumping at it. Sadly as a newbie I was taken advantage of the first time also.

I knew it wasn't all colt when I bought it. I'm just wondering if he replaced things with lesser quality parts or better ones. The previous owner passed away so there's no way to know. Iv fired it already and it performed well. I'll do further tests this week.

While it is a mix master I would say that you didn't do too bad. That barrel looks to be 14.5", it's very desirable and will fetch a pretty penny from the Colt crowd, it would be worth more with the original front sight base. No way of knowing who made the upper but I wouldn't be too worried about it.
