Colt Canad to sell to Civilians ?

yawn,

Sorry Mike this has been covered repeatedly in the last few years.

Originally the Cdn Gov't bought the license to manufacture the M16 series in Canada as the C7 and C8 - Diemaco was the manufacturer nothing more.

Diemaco, and Colt then approach the Cdn Gov't to alter the lic to allow them to provide weapons to the RCMP.

Severals years after (but pre'911) they went to the Cdn gov't again to allow them to provide weapons to local LE.
However due to the fact the lic is from Colt - all weapons sold to LE have to be end usered and approved by US DoS (inc parts).

For those who doubt the timeline or facts:
I spoke to Gen (ret.) Keyes CEO of Colt at several times during this timeline. I also spoke to several of the rotating VP's for Sales and Marketing of Diemaco...

While I would love if DiemacoColt Canada did in fact sell to civilians in Canada -- I just can't see it -- I think there is a greater likelyhood of getting a Diemaco gun thru Colt in the US (uppers and barrels have already filtered down as part of Colt subcontracting to big D.)

One of the requirements to supply Diemaco exclusively to Cdn Army, the government made Diemaco agree not to sell to the civilian market.

I'm curious if there's even a reason for this? Or was this grand plan just another excuse to keep scary looking things out of respectable hands?

Uhm no...

The Gov't owns the licence - it and Colt determine who they wish to sell too.
As you can see by my post above the original intent never even included foriegn armies, the RCMP or other Canadian LE agencies, let alone civilains.

Canuck223... You have it right... Maybe that is "why" Colt is setting up in Canada, to avoid US restrictions...

I still occassionally go to bcsb too. been too busy with other stuff in my life the last year though. And yes, I remember Tanya!!!! Haven't heard from her in ages. How's she doing?

Yes, I do a little work at YVR. And other places too. But right now I'm in charge of training in my unit, firearms, fitness, and other disciplines that go along with a section that has trained at Dwyer Hill.

And no, in case any one is wondering, I'm not part of DnD. I am Federal, but not that part.

Now im curious, what unit do you work for?

It's a secret.

But it deals with national security. And not the 'ooo, this poor citizen is bringing in a gun part, we better harass him' kind of national security.

are you hiring? :D

Speaking of the 'Queens Cowboys....' and Dwyer Hill.......If im not mistaken didn't the RCMP get punted out of there in 1993 and JTF2 took over, funny no body seems to comment about that bit of 'history'.

I think it's more likely to do with labour costs, Colt's have been having never-ending problems with the union at their plant in Connecticut, plus the Diemaco plant makes the LSW version of the M16 and I think the Canadian Govt. service contract has a way to go as well (think: C7A2).

My personal view for a long time has been that Colt's are toast when the TDP rights for the M4 carbine expire in 2009 (although they will still get royalties from the Govt. if anyone else makes it). FN will be able to undercut them on any future contract because their labour costs are lower, and what else has Colt's got other than the M4?

Expect Colt's to become a lot more keen on civilian sales of their rifles around 1 July, 2009. And suddenly around then, they will come out with a re-tooled 1911 as well, I suspect. And as per usual, it will be too late in the day and they will either go bankrupt or shrink is size substantially.
