Colt CM901

Does anyone know how Colt has managed to use one buffer spring and buffer weight for both 5.56 and 7.62 uppers? I'm assuming you don't have to swap them out when you swap uppers as well.

Given that you can put any 'legacy' upper on that lower, I would believe you'd have to switch buffers.

Colt's just added the SP901 to their manufacturer's page lineup. :D And they're advertising it as a varmint / hunting rifle! :D

THE RIFLE FOR ANY HUNT!

Be it prairie dog hunting in Texas, whitetail hunting in Maine or elk hunting in Colorado, the Colt SP901™ is the rifle for the hunt. Chambered in the classic .308 Winchester (7.62x51 NATO) cartridge, the SP901 is the perfect choice for medium to large sized game animals. Exceptional accuracy is assured by its full floated, 16" chrome lined barrel and one-piece monolithic upper receiver, suitable for mounting your optic of choice. Keeping the varmint hunter in mind, the .308 Winchester upper receiver group can be easily swapped out for any Mil-Spec Colt upper receiver chambered in .223 Rem (5.56x45 NATO). The fact that all operating controls are ambidextrous, including the magazine release, bolt catch and safety, makes for versatility and ease of use. You can depend on the new Colt SP901 to take the shot of your lifetime!

Starscream wants!!

What's with the angles on the front end of that lower receiver? Something doesn't look right. At first glance I would have said it doesn't appear to be compatible with a milspec 5.56 upper. How can it mate up with a milspec upper when the pin hole is lowered?

There's a magwell adapter block, that's what they showed during shot show but looks like Colt's patent got approved and they're doing something entirely different. (Note: This is for the select fire CM901, but I'd imagine most of the concepts are the same for the SP901 vs the CM901 minus select fire).

In alternate embodiments, other mating and locking features could be provided. In this manner, the modular magazine well 46 interlocks with the modular upper receiver and 55 different receivers and wells with the same interface can be interchanged without further disassembly.Magazine well receiver module 46 is positioned in front of lower receiver 44 as shown and interfaces with a corresponding portion of upper receiver 34. Magazine well receiver module 46 may 60 butt against a corresponding surface of lower receiver 44 and may accept the trigger guard of lower receiver 44 in a recess or in a snap-in fashion. With a conventional firearm, the user must disassemble the main components, in cases with separate fasteners whereas with the present invention, 65 in a "snap and go" fashion, the user may interchange main components and subassemblies without special tools and with out fasteners. As an example, the firearm may be converted from a .223 caliber round to a 9 mm caliber round by replacing the barrel and magazine well and magazine without special tools or fasteners. As a further example, the firearm may be converted from a semi-automatic to automatic by replacing the lower receiver."

Looks like they took the slightly more clever route: the magwell is now a modular component of the lower receiver.

Think you got it backward, that patent is dated Nov 2006, so it's 5 years old now....

Colt has gone with an internal adaptor, and they are still playing coy with it
