A friend has a prohibited I think colt commander, like or is a 1911 but smaller grip than a full size 1911, was wondering if it was possible to put a longer slide/barrel on the smaller frame to make it more suitable for my wifes hands and licenceable for her restricted pal?. Anyone do this?. I realize it may require some custom machining but other than that does anyone think it can be done?
Thanks

There are three major varients of the 1911.

Full size - say no more
Commander - full sized frame, but 4.25 inch barrel, still not prohibited
Officers ACP - reduced length frame, and 3.5 inch barrel 12(6) prohib

All three are the same distance around the grip given the same trigger and grip panels. If frame size is important, all three are essentially the same, although the reduced sized slides and frames obviously shed some weight from the standard full size model.

If your friend has an Officers ACP, it is possible to fit a 106mm barrel, and re-register it. I just hope you don't.

If it is a Officer's the recoil spring will be exposed with a Government slide. A Commander slide will fit correctly.
