Colt Diamondback Thoughts?

The Colt 357 is more similar to the Python than the trooper. It shares the same I frame configuration and lockwork as the Python.Colt morphed that gun into the Python in 1955 and the 357 fell to the wayside. They are very nice guns and usually great buys compared to what Pythons sell for.I see them occasionally on EE.

I tried to keep this alive: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/847613-Show-your-PYTHONs-amp-Snakes-Here You can find lots of good info if you are patient enough to go through all the pages. Yes photobucket did screw up many pictures but some are still there. Enjoy.

^^ Damn that's fine!

This thread is the essence of jealousy for me. I just keep repeating to myself "you have a Python calm down, don't buy anymore they cost too much, you already spent way too much on the Python". Gun addiction.. Never understood why people can be so materialistic until I got into guns. Now I understand what it's like to constantly crave buying something.

This diamondback will just give you a quick hit until the next..

Yep, I have my name down for a Manhurin MR73 and it has just occurred to me that I don't own a .44. I guess it never ends and there is always going to be that "next" gun.:d

Is there a list somewhere for the Manurhin MR73??

Lol I'm serious, I'll put my name on that one aswell. I haven't seen any in Canada, only heard of them. It's next to a Korth Combat on my long list.

My list of guns I need is so long it's scary, no end in sight. I don't have a .44 or a single action revolver yet either. Need some baby glocks soon because glock is my fav plastic gun and I don't have a plastic .45 and need a 26 and 19. That is the short list I have of guns I needed yesterday, I still have a long list of guns needed aswell. Then there's the list I haven't written for when I have gotten all of those.

I have only took out my Browning hi power I got recently to the range once. Still haven't took out my beretta 950 and waiting on my beretta 71 to arrive.

The only other thing that makes me spend blindly like this is girls and travelling. Atleast with this I have something more tangible than memories, and/or strange bumps I have to get the doctor to identify.

Once you have the 73 you'll at least know you have the finest quality DA revolver made (1 or 2 others might be close to or equal it but none better), but I bet it won't quell the desire for new acquisitions! Too much interesting stuff out there.

That's the thing isn't it? There is always the next one. I have to wonder if 5 minutes after shooting an MR73 for the first time the first thought isn't "I wonder how it compares with a Korth?";)

I think that is probably a given!

Although in general I find that at certain point they all seem to shoot equally well, it is in the fitting, finishing, materials and details where the extra costs become evident.

More than 300,000 Colt DiamondBacks were made by Colt. Colt made them on the Police Positive frame, and they are essentially a dressed up or evolved Police Positive revolver. Mostly in .38 special, the rare versions are the nickel 4" 22LR ones. The trigger action does not mirror that of the venerable Colt Python. But equally a difficult double action, but they are pretty.

Colt made many generations of the Police Positive revolver, the last being the DiamondBack. Colt intended to capitalize on the looks of the Python. I once ran into a guy selling a Colt DiamondBack at the LV Riviera hotel Antique Gun & Knife show. He claimed it was one of the only DB's Colt made in stainless steel.... Unfortunately for him, Colt never made any DB's in stainless...his DB had the ColtGuard finish....incidentally, Colt did make some Pythons with the ColtGuard finish too....

Is the 88 a different kettle of fish, I see them listed, nut have never handled ether one , I think a korth would be a nice test drive.
Is there a distributor in Canada, maybe I had better not ask.

for Korth: https://wanstallscustom.com/handguns.html#!/p=1&manufacturer=1100&order=name

The Classic is the traditional hand fit Korth. The National Standard is the new 'econo' line (parts designed to require less hand fitting so cheaper). It is apparently also very good and well put together.

For Manurhin i think both Tradex and CSC get them in. Sailor would know. I don't know much about the 88 other than sailors review, but it is half the price of the 73.

Both Calgary Shooting Centre and Tradex sell Manhurin.

As I understand it the MR88 was developed in 1988 as a less costly to produce option for police agencies that were baulking at the price of the MR73. I believe the frame design was aquired from Ruger and the rest of the gun is Manhurin.

edit

Just to clarify.....There is quite a bit of conflicting information on the MR 88. Unfortunately, a lot of what is on the net about these guns is in French (much of it on Youtube). Some of what I've found suggests just the frame is from the Ruger Security Six while other sources say it's a Ruger frame and action while only the barrel and cylinder is Manhurin. I'm also not clear on whether Ruger produced the parts, just licensed the design or (as some suggest) actually sold tooling to Manhurin.

I know that the trigger on my 88 is such that if it is Ruger it's been more finely made and fitted/tuned by Manhurin as it is really very, very good

I have two Colt Diamondbacks. 22LR and 38 special. . The polish and bluing is not as nice as my Pythons but still very nice. . I remember reading an article from 1976 where it was said the barrels were made using the Python tooling. . Both my DB's, the 22 LR and 38 spec, are nice to shoot.

How does the Diamondback feel sizewise to the Python? I want to feel the Diamondback in person to compare the sizes of the two. Almost pulled the trigger on one last year. I'm intrigued by scaled down models of guns. With the Diamondback I prefer the .38 as I'd like the .22 to be scaled down more to the size of the cartridge.

Colt should have made an even smaller snake for the .22. Call it a Pit Viper or Copperhead or Rattler. The snake line could have been endless.. The .500 could be called the "Titanoboa".. Its an absolute shame they dropped the line.

There are very few options for smaller framed classy DA revolvers like Colt and S&W in .22 and mouse calibers. The K frame is too big imo, I haven't seen the J frame but I think they should have smaller models for the .22. Maybe the mechanics make it impossible to downsize, doubt it.

I haven't been able to reconcile purchasing a model 17. The K frame is huge compared to a .22 and only 6 rounds?!? They should raise round count and make a size smaller than J. That would be a cool .22, keep it classy like a scaled down 586 half size.. Now I'm dreamin'.

I have a newer Model 63 J frame 8 shot, and it is a really nice package. The J seems to be the perfect size for the 22 LR imo.

The original Trooper shared the same I frame lockwork. All that was changed when the Trooper Mk III was introduced. - dan
