I wasn't much interested in versions of US 5.56 rifles that were prevalent in KAF. One USAF Airman explained to me that the uppers would sell very well on the used market, simply because they were old, odd and scarce versions.

Odd that you mention it but yeah, weird to think that the carry handle mix master GAU-5 of later generations were still being carried by USAF in early Afghanistan and Iraq. It wasn't until the later 00's that they were all but replaced by newer hand-me-downs (I say "all but" because the USAF doesn't let working rifles go without a reason and the carry handle GAU still pop up in weird places.
