I am thinking of buying a Colt 1911 as an accurate shooter. A Colt Cup looks appropriate.

CZ now owns Colt. I am wondering if they will/have change the way this pistol is made?

Is there any indication that current production pistols are better or worse than older ones?

If an older one is the better choice, what years are good? Or not good?

Curious about this as well.

CZ has taken ownership of Dan Wesson and I know that those pistols are every bit as good as they were.

Frankly Colt's have been a bit hit or miss over the years (like S&W and many others I suspect). I paid a premium for a Colt Special Combat Government made in the early 2000's and it was not a well finished product. Older is not always better.

Pick your price point and buy a 70 series in whatever manufacturer suits your fancy.

FWIW I own a few CZ rifles and pistols and have never had a bad one. As mentioned above, CZ also bought out Dan Wesson a few years back and my PM-7 1911 (made by CZ) was a great shooter.

Picked up a Colt Gold Cup in 9mm. It's a beautiful pistol but not quite as smooth as the Dan wesson. Also had to install a higher catching mag release as most of my 10 round magazines (Tripp, Magnum Research & Dawson) were all throwing the bullet into the bottom of the barrel. Feeds great now after the $30 upgrade. The factory Colt 8 round magazine fed perfectly before. I've heard this isn't an issue on the 45 ACP models.

Wait for SFRC to have a sale and pick up a Colt.. Or a Dan wesson.. You won't be disappointed.

I checked SFRC and I see they have the Colt; and at a good price, too.

They also have the Sig Sauer 1911 Emperor. I have never handled a SIG 1911, but my other Sigs are all well amde and well finished.

Anyone care to compare the SIG to the Colt Gold Cup\?

I just picked up a new Delta Elite from SFRC and it is also finicky with mags. Slide won't lock back with some so suspect it needs slightly longer catch.

Colt doesn’t make good pistols for a while, instead buying a colt, consider some custom made Wilson, Les Baer, nighthawk or other brand. If you really want a good looking and well made gold cup, search for one made during the 70’s but still, better to look for a good and reliable Wilson combat instead.

Over the years, I've had a few1911 custom jobs and a couple of Gold Cups. A while back I lucked onto a mint Kimber Super Match II with all the trimmings. Without a doubt, it the smoothest sweetest I've ever had in the way of a 1911. And its got a trigger pull compareable to that of a S&W revolver on single action. Like breaking glass! This one I keep!!

OK. Any good or bad years to be aware of?

Not that I'm aware of. Series '70 Gold cups were great, only fly in the ointment, and a small one at that was the collet style barrel bushing. Replace with a well fitted solid (match) bushing and you're good to go. Oh, and replace the rear sight pivot pin with a quality drill bit stem of the correct size instead. The factory pins were known to break.
