I'm interested in some opinions with regards to these two firearms.

First up is the fairly well known Colt LE 6920.
Bascially a semi only M4 type of carbine. 16.1 inch barrel. Twist rate 1/7.
It's a flat top with a detachable carry handle.

Our second contestant is the Colt AR-15A3 Tactical or AR6720.
This carbine appears to be almost identical to the LE 6920 except it has a heavy 16.1 inch barrel and the twist rate is 1/9.

I've always been a fan of the heavy barrel, but I'm not sure which one I'd prefer. I'm thinking maybe next year I'll buy one of them.

Any suggestions would be great. Please explain why you would choos either rifle.

Thanks.

Have barrel is just additional weight with negligible accuracy benefit, plus the additional heat capacity is kind of pointless in a semi-automatic rifle. The 1:9 twist will let you shoot lighter loads but will not stabilize heavier match loads, the 1:7 is optimized for NATO's 62-grain SS109/M855/C77 cartridge. The heavy barrel will also weigh unbalance your carbine with forward weight. LE6920 all the way.

Well I have to admit. I do like accuracy.

Greentips, if you could only have one, which one would it have been?

Thanks

maybe later on :D. depending on how I do for overtime.
But for next year I'm looking at one or the other.

Heavy barrels don't belong on carbines.

I have two 6920's, and don't miss the 6720 I sold to buy the second 6920.

I'll second that. It's just worthless weight that'll throw your balance off. Plus the LE6920 has M4 double heatshield handguards and a side-sling swivel adapter.

I'm probably going to go with the AR6720 next year if I can get one.

I like bull barrels. They've always worked well for me. The extra weight doesn't make much difference to me. I'm willing to trade off the extra weight for better accuracy. I'll add a CTR stock and a railed hand guard. That should take a bit of the weight off :D.

I think you'll be happy with either one, they're both great rifles; just one thing to think about - when you get that railed hand guard, and then put a light on, then a VFG, etc, it starts getting pretty heavy, cumbersome and front-heavy quickly - and that's without the heavy barrel.

Hi

Get one, and then buy another upper. It's a fairly cheap thing to do.

My vote would go to the lightweight carbine as the first purchase. Next up I'd get a long barrel flat top upper. With good optics these rifles can be *very* accurate.

Not a big fan of the AR6720 barrel -- I have one that I am trying to offload. To heavy and limited to the 69gr ammo. I only load 77gr Nosler for competition, and the 1:9 does not work well with Frangible ammo (due to the length) so its not very useful to me in either purpose.

If one wanted to swap a barrel...

Hi

If you are going to run a heavy barrel, take it out to something longer than the M4 format. The M4 is a handy / doesn't get in the way length. If you are after accuracy and range bit longer barrel in 1:7 twist is going to help.

I'll be buying a longer length bull barrel AR-15 later on.

I was just thinking about a carbine for now. I'm probably just going to go for the LE6920. I'll leave the bull barrel for my longer barrelled rifles. Keep it light and mobile for fast 100 yard and closer distances. Probably put an aimpoint or an Eotech on it.

I'm not too worried about the weight with the rail. Not much will be going on it. I like the look with a carbine, free floating and weight. I don't like it on my longer rifles, but it seems to suite the carbines.

Hi

Now for the big question - Do you really want that great big front sight sticking up there if you are running a red dot?

I'm not saying that you can't use it that way. I've done it and it does work. It's a lot neater if you dump the front sight though ...
