are these upper just an expensive novelty or is there any real benifit for use in a Canadian environment?
 
How viable is a SAW without a quick change barrel...me thinks someone made these to use up some inventory, Colt scrapped the project back in 60's originally, guess they tried to revive it. :?
 
The Colt LMG has been made in both closed bolt and open bolt formats, I don't think there have been any significant sales of the open bolt version though.

Colt sold off a bunch of closed bolt LMG parts kits in the mid-1990s, price is going skyward for them now.

I don't think that there are limits for belts. I can't remember who I heard it from. Maybe someone can correct me?

For guns designed before 1945, there is no belt size limit. Guns designed afterword are limited to 5 round segments. One could have a barrel full of individual metalic links, but not more than 5 linked torether.

Peter of Marstar brought up an interesting question. What is the status of metalic links for guns designed before 1945, but converted to another caliber later.

My opinion, for the little that it's worth, is that it should not matter, if the belt or link was designed for that gun, and that gun was origionally designed prior to 1945.

If the 1919 Browning in .308 used links origionally designed for the M-60, I can see a problem.
 
Simon - from my understanding all the Infantry units are now M249/C9/Minimi equipted - they still have the LSW's as well. - one unit was trying to use them as a DM type idea.

I handled one of those back in '93 at the Diemaco booth during a DND arms exhibition.

My impression was and remains this: 'just the thing to take the 'light' out of 'Armalite' :lol:

There are a lot of FN Para Minimis in use now, after the MoD swore up and down that the LSW was a wonderful weapon. That BS didn't survive the first contact with the enemy!

The whole thing is insane, because the Minimi, C7 and L119A1, which are used primarly by special forces and the Marines use the L15A1 round, and the SA80 uses the L2A2 round (different powders). You can use the L15A1 in the SA80 without too much trouble, but the L2A2 round in the Diemacos and Minimis is a bit too hard on the gas system.

So now you have units equipped with SA80s and Para Minimis, the Minimis have a mag feed for emergencies, but they aren't allowed to use the same ammo as is used in the SA80s. :roll:

No really, the SA80 is a wonderful weapons system that really was the answer to all our problems...
