AdrianM,
Before I bought this Colt M1911A1 rig I knew nothing about Ferry Command.
So as well as purchasing this rig I got a very interesting history lesson which followed.
For they that may be interested the links below begin to tell the story of Ferry Command.

In WWII the Americans selected two handguns, the .45 cal M1911A1 and the .38 cal S&W.
During the Civil War it was somewhat more complicated.
The .36 Navy caliber and the .44 Army caliber....with numerous manufacturers.
Two other examples of the .44 caliber revolvers.
Model 1858 Remington New Model Army Revolver.
Model 1858 DA Starr Army Revolver.
Probably the most well known .36 cal revolver used by the U.S. during the Civil War.
The Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver...this example has no remaining finish but is U.S. martially marked and was purchased by the U.S. Government from Colt.
It shows the M.Moulton (M.M.) final inspector's acceptance stamp on the left grip.
