Colt navy questions

View attachment 554698Not a lot to choose from out there.
We looked at a few options and he’s definitely wanting the 1851 Navy.
I found one on Marstars site and I’m thinking it’s the way to go.
I think BP will be fun and we can add the conversion later if we want.

45C you and Wild Bill Hickock will ride the Bar Stools and Gambling Halls together. I like my 1858Rem but that 1851 is on my purchase list for this year. Enjoy and let us know how she shoots.

Take Care

Bob

Lol
Now I just need to figure out what I need to load this bad boy.

45C: Good choice. Some of the best advice(at least in my opinion) on what is needed to enjoy your new Navy, is on the duelist1954 youtube site. Host: Mike Beliveau goes over the basics, including loading, cleaning, maintaining and all the tools and accessories needed to shoot c&b revolvers. Easy to find on the site.
Another good source: Blackie Thomas. Blackie also has an entire series of videos on c&b revolver shooting, modifying and maintaining. A bit different from duelist1954, but still very useful information. These two sources alone, should save you a lot of time and aggravation.
If you can't find some of the items you need locally, Track of the Wolf is a good source. Also, Rusty Wood Trading(site sponsor). Hillfolk Musket Supplies.....etc.
For replacement parts: VTI Gun Parts. There are more, but enough to get you going.
Hope this helps

Al

Note: Cabelas also lists quite a few of the things you'll need. Worth a look.

the only problem I have with the 1851 BP colts is that the rear sight is just a notch in the HAMMER. My MAN WITH NO NAME gun has the rear sight at the back of the barrel same as a 1871/72 navy does. This is the reason why Ishot a 1858 REMINGTON when I was shooting BLACK POWDER, Much better sight picture. Ilike my open top COLTS but I shoot better with my REMINGTONS.

PROPHET RIVER has a nice selection of single actions in their TAYLOR FIREARMS section.

I’m personally an SAA fan and I do like the Taylor’s open top.
But my sons got a thing for the Navy, with the octagon barrel and the full length loading lever.

We’re currently watching the spaghetti westerns and he can’t get enough… lol
He’s 15

if you get a chance watch CLINT'S PALE RIDER, He uses 1858 BP remintons and it is cool to watch him swap out cylinders so fast, kinda fake because BP is dirty so after the 2nd cylinder you would fighting like hell to get cylinder out, but fun to watch. HELL ON WHEELS is also good because they do use period correct guns it it. Its funny when you watch some of the old JOHN WAYNE westerns which are good BUT the movie will be set in the 1870's or 1880's and he is carrying an 1892 WINCHESTER (rifle he is known for)

barny961: You're right, in real life a much harder job. Still, the you have to admire the practised ease Eastwood demonstrated, while swapping cylinders. He clearly did his homework.
Another movie I enjoyed that featured a lot of period-correct firearms, was Tom Selleck's: Crossfire Trail. Including actor Wilford Brimley's .44 Evans. Hell on Wheels, too. Enjoyed the series.
Nice to see more authenticity in western films.

45C: The '51 Navy is a great shooting gun. Well balanced. Points and shoots naturally. Especially when shooting one handed(Duelist or Gunfighter style). Both you and your son will really enjoy shooting it.

By the way, if you want to watch some really nice '51 Navy action, go to jed i tv. Likely one of the best cowboy action sites on you tube. Your shooting tastes may not run in that direction, but a great venue to watch these guns being put through their paces.

Al

ps: Not all episodes feature jed shooting his c&b revolvers. But easy to search out.

Actually many Hollywood westerns at this time did another mistake. Used M94 30-30 Winchester's to stand in for many repeating Winchesters.

Mine has the notch in the hammer, and it is in exactly the right place; it is stupid accurate.
