Colt New Service from my Grandfather

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share some pictures on my newly acquired Colt New Service I received from my Grandfather. His father had it before him, but we are not sure how it came into his hands. Below are a few pictures (not the best photographer of guns so far).







Definitely needs a good cleaning!

I also got some old ammunition from him:

.455 Colt



Some old .22LR



And some random other ones:


The left is stamped 8mm Dominion, the middle is stamped DAC 52 L5Z, and the right is the .455.

I also bought a couple boxes of .455 Webley as this is supposed to work fine with this revolver. Below is a comparison of the .455 Colt and the new .455 Webley:


Hopefully I shouldn't have any issues with shooting that ammo, really want to put a couple of rounds through this beast!

Anyways, any thoughts or opinions on how to care for it (besides normal firearm care) would be great! If anyone has any idea of the crimped round and what it is, I would be curious to know. Also, I shouldn't have any issues firing the new .445 Webley correct? It is the same size case(diameter wise) I believe, just a bit shorter.

Nice Colt! I love the old New Service revolvers. They are highly underrated Colt revolvers, it was one of the earliest models (of any brand) of revolver that featured both a swing out cylinder, and one that rotated clockwise. It is still the longest serving service pistol for the RCMP, a testament to its robust design. Yours hasn't been fitted with target sights, it came from the factory like that - it's a target model. It's also an early model, judging by the straight barrel all the way to the frame. An archive letter from a Colt would give you more history, including to whom it was originally shipped. That gun is very heavily built, and can easily handle 455 webley factory loads.
 
Awesome thanks! I wasn't aware of the Colt Archive Letter program, that seems pretty neat. Will have to get one of those in the future for sure :D.

Can't wait to take it to the range and try it out. :D

They came in several variants over the years, that was one of them.

Could you post pictures of top strap/ rear sight as well as the front sight, because it sure had the authentic look of. colt NST!

Those pics are quite fine, as is the subject. (Alas, no "green with envy" emoticon available.) Don't you dare go firing any of those collector-grade Webley rounds (well, maybe a couple); Get a hold of "Jethunter" here on CGN who can supply you with the proper boolits. (Brass may be hard to find, though.). Then start reloading and get the old boy out on the range! Lee makes dies; Henry at Budget Shooter Supply can get those for you.
