I was cleaning my Colt Python today and just wondered about the lineage of its design. I know that the Python is a finely-tuned, highly-polished and virtually-handmade revolver, but I wondered if the basic design of its action is similar to, and thus descended from, the Colt New Service. I know that the innards of the later Colt Trooper are quite different from the Python, and that the Trooper was designed for a higher degree of mass production.

All info appreciated.

Looks very similar to my NS, with major differences from the New Army/Navy. The Python's frame evolved from the "41"/Official Police/Trooper/357 line.

Look for the very nice and expensive book Colt, an American Legend by R.L. Wilson, and Jerry Kuhnhausen's Shop Manuals.
