Colt Pistol A real collectors sleeper.

Guys this is a gun I owned 30 years ago. I sold it not knowing what I had, but I got it back. 497 manufactured/1970. 350 shipped overseas, leaving 147 for everyone else. Officers model match Mk 3 38 special. I even have the box and papers.

Beautiful gun, make from '69 to '71. I was watching it on ee as well, I wanted it bad but a little to rich for me because I had just bought a python. Hopefully it will come up again one day. I'll be watching, keep her shiny ;)

My point was that while it appears that this is a very nice revolver, probably a decent shooter and the new-found owner is happy he has it back, the extra provenience and rarity of the unit this it supposedly has is overblown. I saw the posted price for this unit in the EE and I believe that the purchase price was inflated for a gun that is not as desirable as a PYTHON in my opinion.

After all this is a discussion site, not just praise the other guy's gun site. Persons post ideas and pictures, we discuss and opine. In my very brief discussion I compared the price of this unit to that of a PYTHON for a similar sale. "Kelmar87" said this gun was made from 1969-1971. Not a lot of sales. Colt produced the Python from 1955-2005. Over a half a million made.

Even "Brutus" says the gun is neither here nor there.

This is a beautiful gun and id love to have it. That being said I did think it was over priced a few hundred and it was over the blue book value a bit. I think what hurts it alot is that its 38 only and that is probably why the python is more popular. Im sure the action is very much the same in the two guns.
 
Problem I see here is this is a very nice looking revolver, but sincerely this was a period of time when Colt was doing some serious cost cutting measures. They admitted they could no longer afford the hand fitting required for previous models. The Mk III series was mostly machine made with less hands on fitting needed. Also the internal parts has many of what we now call MIM. The greatest error here is that the trigger and sear engagement cannot be honed or worked on, period. Hardly a ringing endorsement for a comapny that previously manufactured the fine Python series.
One could even argue this series was the beginning of the demise of fine Colt DA revolvers. This was not addressed until the King Corba/Ananconda series came along. Even then there were issues with the first batch of Anacondas.
Add to this issue the severe lack of trained Colt gunsmiths on this side of the border.
Don't get me wrong, I have some Colts too, but they do not get shot quite as often as some other sixguns.
You don't have to believe me. See if Grant Cunningham has any ringing endorsements of this series?
I tell you what, he does have at least two articles on the Python alone.
This Mk III is nice to look at on the shelf.
