Hello Gents,

My grandfather gave me a COLT Police Positive, in .38 cal. When I first got it, I assumed it was .38 Special - of course, this was before I did research into why .38 Special bullets weren't fitting. So now that I am acquainted with the fact that it is actually chambered in ".38 Colt New Police", where can I buy 38 Colt New Police ammo in Canada?

Also, if any of you own this revolver, or have information on it (specifically on cleaning techniques, value, legality, etc) I would be much obliged if you were to inform me.

Thanks.

38 New Police is fully interchangeable with 38 S&W. Colt would not put their competitors names on their products so they had 38 S&W and 38 Special ammo loaded with flat nosed bullets and called them 38 NP and 38 Colt Special respectively. Ammo with the Colt designation on the box and the hs was loaded by the ctg makers for decades.

38 S&W is still fairly common, bought 2 boxes a few months back for my enfield revolvers at WSS.

I save the brass for reloading. :D

Still fairly common but dang it's getting expensive!

The only way to go it to get some dies, gather up as much brass as one can find and roll your own. [I see you already do that, too.... ;) ]

And Marlin, and Winchester, and S&W, etc, etc. As to the value, unless it has some special papered status (famous owner etc), or is NIB, figure a couple of hundred bucks, tops, and most go for less then that. A shame too, as these little D frame guns are actually quite a nice revolver. Eventually, they became the Diamondback, a small jewel in the Colt line up. With a little slicking up, they are a great gun for people with small hands. - dan
