Colt Series 70 - Slide to Frame Fit

Happy New Year!

Question for you guys about my Colt 1911. The slide seems to be very loose to the frame, is there a way to "tighten" the fit of the slide to the frame?

I am assuming the loose fit is decresing accuracy.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Shoot a group and find out.

I used a vise on my edge and on an SP01 and they both had smaller groups afterward. I dont recommend you do this but it is possible to do.

or in your case (Ontario), Rodger at Dark...
I bet they know exactly what to do with your gun...

Colts seem to shoot as well as any non target grade 1911 even with the looser than average slide, that extra "play" is there for good reason IMO. If you're looking for more accuracy I would look at improving other areas before messing around with the slide fit.
 
If you want to tighten your slide, I would recommend sending it to a pro, it could end up being a lot cheaper in the long run to get a professional to do it. The end decision is yours to make, sometimes it's better to spend a little rather than a lot.

My 2 cents worth.

The fit between frame and slide is of little importance to a tight grouping ( less than 20%).
The fit between barell/bushing/slide is way more important IMHO, more than 50%.....if your bushing is loose, that could be a good start!
 
Jerry Kuhnhausen has written one of the definitive manuals on the 1911 and here's what he says regarding accuracy:

Doesn't a full length guide rod [FLGR] assist with "consistent verticle lockup"? Which, according to Kuhnhausen, would account for 20% accuracy potential?

That could be the topic of a whole new debate, some claim it does and others swear it doesn't. Personally I like em.

Yeah, I think we bashed about that topic on another 1911 thread on the board here. :redface: :D I like 'em too but most of my 1911's that I currenly own don't have 'em, so obviously I can live without 'em.

Just wonder if that was what Kuhnhausen was refering to on his chart, though.
