Quick question - has anyone here ever shot an SP1 without deflector left handed?

I've actually never shot a non-deflector 5.56 upper and as a lefty, I'm curious if it's a real issue or more a perceived than anything else.

Long before case deflectors were thought of, we left handed shooters knew to remove the ejector spring and cut 2 to 3 coils off of it then re-install. Works well and launches the brass forward to the right not back to your head.

I was shooting some of that Russian (Hungarian) .223 from my rifles with a case deflector and got hit about 50% of the time as the case is that much lighter than a brass case, being steel with a zink finish applied, it come back faster!!!

I think bushmaster makes competition shell deflectors, they basically clip on to the upper.

Or you could always replace the upper with receiver with an A2 style that does have the shell deflector, 15 minutes with the proper tools.

I made this out of sheet metal, but then gave up and ditched it.

Right, so what I'm hearing is I might need a shell catcher or deflector if I want to shoot an SP1. That's too bad, I was considering purchasing one.

Did Colt ever make an SP1-type rifle with A1 sights, Triangular HG's, etc. but WITH the deflector?

Just place a WTB in the EE. I've picked up a couple there over the years, even found a Colt for cheap. Bushmaster still makes C7 style uppers if you can't find a used one.

Don't see why an A2 would be considered "way better". The differences are minor, with the sights and increased diameter of the barrel at the FSB being the obvious ones. A lot of people prefer the 1/9 or 1/7 twist of the newer rifles but if you're just plinking with 55gn ammo then their is nothing wrong with 1/12. I have an 11.5" Armalite with A2 upper, those fancy sights are of little use on such a short barrel so I have a C7 style upper waiting to be installed in its place. I simply prefer the look of the C7 in this case.

Of course this doesn't really apply to an SP1 since it will have a large hole upper and lower. A conversion pin would need to be used. You make get lucky and find an M16A1 style rifle for sale. I picked up a nice rifle with GI spares contract upper and A1 style PWA lower for a very nice price in the EE.
