I'm looking at a Colt SP1 Ar-15. I like a few features on it better than my Norc CQ311 (the mag release is not shrouded, etc).

What can anyone tell me about this gun? Barrel twist? Value in pretty nice condition? I wonder if it's worth selling my Norc and going to this one...Benefits? Compare to the Colt HB Sporter?

Gunnar :)

Thanks, guys

I was hoping it had a 1:9 barrel so I could shoot the heavier bullets, but realistically I buy and load almost exclusively the Hornady 55's from Higginson, so what the heck? My Norinco gets just under an inch and a half at 100m with these loads - should I expect much better from a decent SP1?? I know I got around 1/2" with an HBar sporter I had here a few years ago...

What really impresses me about this one is the "unfenced" mag button which lets me use it easier (I have a nerve-damaged right hand so reach around with my left.) Of course I can just put an ambi release on my Norc...

Decisions, decisions...

I've got an all original Colt SP1 - pencil barrel, triangular handguard, sans forward assist. Chrome lined bbl. 1:12" twist. Absolutely loves 55gr pills. Heavier stuff is hit or miss. I like it a lot.

Gunnar: You will love the original (now retro) SP1's... Very clean, very simple. I have owned 3 SP1's at different times over the past 20 years. Accuracy was around 1.5" to 1.75" depending on the ammo.

Then once the A2 series came out, back in the mid 80's with the HBAR, what a difference I noticed in accuracy. I could get the odd sub MOA if I could shoot in between hearbeats with the heavy factory trigger. Most of the time , the groups were around 1.0" to 1.25" to 1.5" depending on whether I could manipulate that gritty trigger. Barrels were accurate though.

IIRC lots and lots of Black Badge shooters just adored the SP1 for IPSC Rifle matches since the SP1 was so light with the iron sights.

Enjoy the addiction.
