Colt Thunderer questions

Hey all, a friend of mine has recently acquired a Colt Thunderer. 45 Colt, it is a low 3 digit serial number, we think it was made in 1871. I would say it's in good, maybe very good condition considering how old it is. I am wondering of anyone can give an approximate value on it? It's not my gun so I can't post pictures...don't know how anyway. Thanks
 
A Colt "Thunderer" can't be in 45 colt.

A Colt "Double Action Army" or model 1878 could be in .45 Colt.

A 3 digit serial number would be 1878 or possibly early 1879.

Value? With the information you have been able to provide, somewhere between $100 and $8,000.

I doubt that it is a flattop target, so a more realistic top value is around $2,500.
 
Assuming it’s in 41 Colt, then it’s a model 1877. Good to very good condition with good mechanicals might put it in the $2000 - $3000 range. Maybe. Bad mechanicals, as is mostly the case with the model 1877, would reduce its value significantly...
 
And as a side note, if you want a better valuation you should post pictures here. Condition is subjective, apicture speaks 1000 words with these old guns. As the previous poster mentioned, there is some problems with your description. The 1877 Thunderer was never made in 45. Additionally, no production Colt was made in 45 in 1871, so the year is wrong as well. A picture would show exactly what model you are dealing with...
 
Hi! Me again, after some consultation with my friend, we still believe it's a .45 so it must be a Double Action Army or Frontier model 1878 I'm thinking. Thanks for the input, it has led me in a more accurate direction!
 
If it’s a .45 from that era, it’s either a Single Action Army (model 1873) or a Frontier (Model 1878)...
