colt vs kimber

I have both a COLT 1911 and a Kimber 1911. I guess if I had to keep only one I would keep the Colt. When I use them I don't see much difference in them. They both work great and they both shoot great. But well you know a Colt is a Colt.

Get a Colt with a 5" barrel. Kimber is notorious for low quality small parts and a lack of QC. Larry Vickers, Ken Hackathorn, and Hilton Yam have all spoken favourably with regards to current production Colts.

My first designated paper puncher for bullseye shooting was a customized Colt 1911. Since then, I've had a number of other Colt 1911s including two or three Gold Cups. No complaints. I still have one customized Colt, one that an old gunsmith friend made up for his own personel use.



Also, I presently still have a S&W 4506.





Not too long ago, I thought I'd like one more top line 1911, even though my bullseye style shooting is minimal these days. I had the opportunity to acquire a Kimber Super Match II, plus the trimmings that go with it.



I haven't yet put all that much through it so I can't speak on a comparisson of the test of time between the two. But, from what little I have done with it to date, it's the sweetest of any of the 1911s I've ever had, without a doubt.

I'm all for the Colt myself.

I never had a Kimber, but I had 3 Colts. Good, solid, reliable, guns. Shot them all extensively and never had any serious problems.

Thinking about Kimber, I seem to recall reading a thread on here about a year ago about some US government department that had been issued Kimbers and were getting rid of them due to unreliability and breakages.

Anyone else remember that article?
 
I don't remember the specific article but the MEUSOC Kimbers were a mess and LAPD SWAT had a lot of issues with theirs. I can't think of anyone else offhand who ever issued them on a large scale.


The Clackamas Kimbers were good machines and had an excellent reputation.

That's a long time ago now, though.

haha, i assure you the novelty of it will wear off quite fast. :) just keep in mind, that all kimbers shoot the same(from my experience) my tactical and raptor, with fixed sights, have shot just
as well as my eclipse. i felt i get amazing groupings with my gold match ii though, but thats because of the adjustable sights i feel. though, i have to say i feel more comfortable with
fixed sights. anyways; i have no doubt when you buy a reputable 1911 (s&w, sig, kimber colt) everything in that price range will shoot great. i never tried a wilson but anything
in that price range(les baer, nighthawk etc...) seem to shoot even better... which i kind of doubt. they're just made better with tenderness to detail. i bet you, you can shoot your
kimber, colt, wilson all the same. it's all in the grip, my friend. with that said, you wont be able to get a good grip hold on a laser grip. ask lakemetal.
he mentioned that to me, and i realized what he meant when i tried my friends :/
 
I think what I need is a loaded Colt. Means I have to wait. This week I got a USP 45 stainless, P220 Super Match, and a P229 Elite stainless. Kinda tapped (doesn't even count the 3x499 package from Canam lol). I can't sem to find any dealer that stocks many Colts beside Epps on the internets. Any suggestions of who regularly has them?

because it's a gun like any other and shouldn't really go wrong unless you missuse it.

a lot of this kimber hate is from people with no hands experience. quit ####ting the company. if it fails to extract, check your grip or clean your gun.(a lot of time, i see people
limp wristing their gun. hold the gun properly and maybe you wont complain about the so called extracting issue)
check the recoil spring as well after a 1000 rounds just incase. failure to feed; check your mags feeding lips or clean the feeding ramp if dirty. overall; clean and
maintain your gun; should be fine. don't skip a cleaning after every outing. if you feel that a gun shouldn't be maintained as much because it's a certain
brand or whatever, would you treat your car the same? change oil, clean the windows when dirty. check your fluids, make sure you get the right kind of
gas and engine oil etc... same ####. not saying you should clean your car and change the oil ALL THE TIME, but at least treat it well and with guns, you have to
clean it a bit more. specifically, before storing, before shooting and after shooting. a clean gun will shoot well and function well.

warranty;; it's nice to have, but thats something you DON'T really want to rely on because if its ####; you might be stuck with a lemon.
i used warranty for my S&W competitor and my uts utas. exchanged my utas but kept the revolver. kimber, haven't had any ####.
again; 1911, all of them, should be well tuned, cleaned, oiled and cleaned with a preservative(clp) to prolong it's livelihood.

seriously, man. a lot of the time i hear "kimber is bad" is not fully discribed or explained well enough on a forum. nay sayers will always
be louder and someone who likes something will not always necessarily come on the internet to say how great it is. think of the internet
as an outlet, and people(who easily complain) will use a forum to speakout, no matter how little it is and drag it out in an exaggerating fashion.

my opinion?

colt - AWESOME!
sig sauer - is ok
kimber - AWESOME!
SW - AWESOME!

those are the ones i have a good hands on experience with.
 
In line with my previous post, I had made a decission to try and obtain one more 1911, but what I was looking for was a top of the line paper puncher, in addition to a couple of other 45 ACPs I already have. The opportunity to pick up a Kimber presented itself and after I did a little checking, I decided to go for it.



It is a Kimber Super Match II which is their top of the line model that has been 'tiddled' by their custom shop to shoot within 1" at 25yds before it's let out to the market. It is second hand but I'd say in 95% condition at least. From what I can see, workmanship, fit and finish are as good as the best of the best that I've previously owned. If there is one point of quality it has that easily exceeds any that I've previously it's the trigger let off/pull. Second to none.

Comments have been made on this thread that the durability of the Kimber may be less than that of Colts for example. That I won't really know however until I put it through 'the test of time'.
