This is essentially Colt's answer to the 416, although Colt's piston design is apparently quite different from HK's. Rumor has it that these will be available for sale in the States by the end of the first quarter. The price is reportedly in the $1200-1500 range. Some pics:

Considering that HK presently has no plans to sell the 416 to civilians, this just might be the gas piston AR to have. Coming from a major firearms manufacturer, it will hopefully be of better quality than the gas piston uppers from certain small no-name manufacturers that people in the States are having problems with.

Interesting. Any chance Colt might sell it to civvies?
Colt does not have a "no civilian sales" policy. In the US, civilians can (and do) buy Colt's LE-marked carbines. I see no reason why they can't be brought into Canada.

I see at least two reasons the US wont issue export permits for these, at least for general resale (non LEO/Mil). Three reasons if they are only full auto.
These come in semi-auto as well. What are the other two reasons?

You would think Colt did its homework on this gas piston upper :dancingbanana: , I really like that PINNED on folding front sight, is that made by Colt aswell? or is it unobtanium KAC gear?

Keep the AR that you have and see if you can get an Ares GSR 35 Black Lightning kit. It is made to be dropped in your rifle in about ten minutes with no alterations to your rifle. A well respected fellow on AR15 built one with this system and has shot it alot to see if it works and so far he has had no problems and he hasn't been gentle.

So if I were to find a dealer in the States who was willing to sell me one, and have the gun shipped to an FFL holder who has an export license and who would do the paperwork for me, is there any reason why the Americans would refuse the export application (provided it's a semi-autos 16" model)? What's the issue with collapsible stocks and flash hiders you mentioned earlier?

Gosh, $1200-1500 sure doesn't sound bad for price. If these things prove reliable, do you think Colt will just stop all gas tube model production from here on in?

I don't see any reason why they should be unreliable. Most battle rifles do have pistons already.

Or, what if we simply wanted the upper receiver assembly alone. Since uppers unlike the lower are not regulated items (just generic gun parts), what's the probability of getting these approved for import up here?

imo, we have no chance.
