Firing Pin Block Mechanism and the Collet Barrel Bushing

Colt Series 80 Firing Pin Block Mechanism

This firing pin blocking mechanism on the Series 80 Colts differentiates the Series 80 Colts from the "true" M1911A1 pistols. The M1911 and M1911A1 pistols do not have this device. The purpose of the firing pin block is to prevent the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is depressed. This "lawyer friendly" mechanism is supposed to prevent "accidental discharges" caused by dropping the pistol or catastrophic mechanical failures. Many 1911 purists feel that the firing pin block adds some mush to the trigger pull although it isn't very much. Remember that no mechanical gadget can replace the safety device which resides between your ears.

I love my Series 70 and am thinking to upgrade it to a Series 80.

Beautiful Pistol with good resale value. If your going to be buying one go with the Series 80, but series 70 is nice to.

Now that's the funniest post I've read on CGN in awhile....

Hint... going to a Series 80 isn't an upgrade.... it's a downgrade....lol... :p

Personally I consider going from Series 70 to 80 a downgrade :)

BTW they haven't used a collet bushing in quite some time.

This thread really needs to be moved.

Either way you go (70 or 80 series) the Government model is without doubt the best there is. Chambered in a 45 is has it all, power, accuracy, reliability.
I retro fitted an Wilson LEK comp to a series 80 and pulled the safety lock out...the gun functioned flawlessly for 15 years of active shooting...it was so reliable it cycled empty cases with ease. It would reliably fire a full mag upside down without a hiccup. In a total of 30 years of shooting I have watched guys trying the newest and best (in their opinion) tupperware guns...all of which failed at some point on the firing line. The Government model just kept on shooting while the other guys were fixing their guns.
BTW...awesome photography "Pietro"
Cheers
