Combination Gun Opinions

I've used a combination 7mm rimmed/20 gauge for nearly fourty years for general hunting in BC. Here hunting seasons for many different species overlap and this is very versatile.

Hi guys, an update on the legality question as requested. My questions to the Ministry of Natural Resources were based on my hunting unit, which for the purpose of this discussion is Ontario 90A which permits a ‘controlled’ shotgun hunt and not an open rifle season, and the spring and fall turkey hunts. The answers are as follows:

1. Using a drilling/combo gun as a shotgun only during the controlled deer hunt without having the rifle Ammo in your possession, the answer is NO, this is because the wording of the law states to ‘use or carry’ a firearm for the hunt. As a combo gun you would be technically ‘carrying’ a rifle which is prohibited for that hunt; and

2. Using a drilling/combo gun for turkey and/or coyote, the answer is YES. The law states that you must ‘use’ a legal firearm for turkey, ie shotgun 20-10 bore shot sizes 4-7. As long as you don’t shoot the turkey with the rifle and use appropriate shot size than you can use the combo gun shotgun barrel and should a coyote come in to the call either the rifle or shotgun are legal to use on the coyote while hunting turkey. The difference here is that the turkey regs only state the ‘use’ where the controlled deer regs state to ‘use or carry’.

So, in a nut shell using a combo gun for my intended plan A for turkey is a go, plan B for the controlled deer hunt, no go.

Thanks to all for their input! Bill

7X57R or 7X65R? Mine is a 57/12Ga, and shines with 175 gr soft points. Friend of mine has the 65. Both work very well on big game.

Under the circumstances and conditions mentioned in post # 10, the bullet I decided on using in the 7x57R is the Hornady 154gr Interlock RN. Why?;) Thought for Blacktail and considering their size, plus taking into consideration conditions and likely ranges, seemed like a reasonable choice. Plus,;)I picked up three boxes of them at a local gun show for a:) 'bargain' price.

FAIR Combo

Here is my F.A.I.R. 12g over 9.3x74R . Shots real nice if the barrel is cool. Not a real world hunting issue of barrel heating up with a combination, lol.

Love my combinations but unless I’m in the forest, my bolts see most of my hunting action.

This gun is super light and very finely put together. Got it on trade from a fellow CGNer

I just ordered a Merkel B4 in 223 / 12 gauge from Wolverine. I'm pretty excited for it as a coyote/grouse gun, turkey/coyote gun, and just all around general tractor and small game gun.

I've always wanted a combo gun, I'm looking forward to joining the club!
