Im looking into getting a multi barrel (3) pump shot gun. Im looking at Mossberg and Rem 870. Im quite familiar with the Remington as I have owned a few in the past, but dont know much about Mossberg's. What are the major differences between the 500 & 535 ATS combos offered by Mossberg?

Im sorta leaning towards the 3 barrel 870 combo because I'm familiar with them, but Remingtons recent QC has got me considering other makes.

looking to get the most bang for buck. recommendations?

What are your financial constraints?
What is the job you wish to accomplish with the 3 barrels?
Look at the 870 WingMaster and you will not look further than your bank account and the store who is going to sell you this setup.
It is not for the faint of heart financially but, as you said you are familiar Remington 870s and in my opinion there will be zero learning curve with a new gun.
Your Call,
Rob

Personally if you are looking at a three barrel I would spend the same money and buy a mossy 930 with two barrels. Bird and deer barrel. The two barrel set for mossy are pretty good. Not sure if I know a lot of people who will shoot 3 and half through a pump. Big kick.

Im looking to keep it under 600$. Want the 3 barrels because I plan on getting into turkey hunting this spring. Also, I could use the longer waterfoul barrel for clays and upland birds, and finally the rifled barrel as a great back-up when hunting deer/bear from a stand. Im also trying to get two friends of mine into hunting/shooting and I wouldnt mind lending this gun as much as my other nicer rifles.

3", or 3 1/2", doesnt matter to me really. I feel like anything I can do with a 3 1/2", I can also do with a 3".

Sorta digging the camo finnish and tang safety on the mossy's. Best price I found so far for a 535 was at Epps, Im looking at 575$ before taxes and shipping. Im hoping I can find one for cheaper, or maybe a mossy 500 3 barrel combo in 12g.

Meanwhile there is a 3 barrel rem 870 express combo for 534$ at Lebarons. I can drive there, so no shipping and they have a no tax sale coming up soon. Hard to beat for that price.

I was in your shoes a few years ago. When I compared the two the 870 felt better, but after reading reviews I went with the 500. I much prefer the tang safety and location of the action release. I like the fact I can do everything without moving my hands from shooting position.

Mossberg has impressed me with their service, two minor issues were corrected over the phone, parts sent out without hassle (no front sling swivels and broken rear sight on turkey barrel).

As far as the barrels go, I use the 28" for waterfowl and clay birds. The 24" I use for turkey and upland hunting as I find the shorter barrel easier to manoeuvre through the bush. The rifled barrel I haven't used much, I am waiting until I make my own sabot slugs (should be soon) as the cost of sabot slugs is a bit nuts. My only issue is I prefer open sights, I ended up getting a rifle sighted barrel as well from a member. I am sure once I get my slugs going I will enjoy the scope. Benefit of having the cantilever is, ideally that you shouldn't have to adjust the scope much after swapping barrels all year (if you don't knock it around).

All in all I still like my 500 after 2 years with it. But I am sure someone will chime in and tell me how wrong I am about my opinion.

535 takes 3.5" shells

Picked up the 3 barrel package for $595 + tax and haven't looked back. Takes 3.5" shells, barrels swap without tools, has sling swivel studs, the rifled barrel has a cantilever rail, turkey barrel has fibre optic sights and comes with 4 chokes.
