coming clean: I've been shooting coyotes with a 22

.22LR solids and heavier H/P's (36-40gr), with average-to-lower velocities (~1250 fps), are proven to have exceptional penetration & cavitation properties...

At one point in my youth I questioned the morality of shooting coyotes with a .22 LR to my dad; " what if you don't hit them perfect and they don't die right away? Wouldn't that be cruel?"
Too which the reply was something along the lines of " Did you know coyotes have been called in and shot with a tape recording of an infant crying"
I still strive for a good clean kill always when I shoot, but if it's hurt or helpless a coyote will kill it.
As will most predators I suppose. But few are as prolific as coyotes.

The inherent cruelty of predator/prey relationships is no rationalization for me to be deliberately cruel myself. I always try to kill the things I must kill, as cleanly and humanely as possible. One of the ways I try to ensure that will happen is by choosing a cartridge for hunting any given animal that will have enough power to always kill cleanly, humanely, and decisively if I behave properly.

I have shot enough coyotes that I have come to believe they are, pound for pound, one of the toughest animals I hunt. I have seen them, sometimes with horrific wounds, run a long way before falling, and I have tracked animals, that really should have died quickly, long distances before finding them. Sometimes, I have actually lost animals I knew I hit. I have used the .22RF when unexpected opportunities on coyotes presented themselves (only three times I can remember), and, because those chances were always very close ones, I was quickly successful with that round ... so far. But my experience with the rim fire certainly makes me think the cartridge is not what I would call "decisive" even at short ranges.

I think the .223 is the minimum round suitable for deliberate hunting of coyotes.

Wow...some of you guys really split hairs...hehe

Nothing wrong with a .22 LR on coyotes, within reasonable distance of course. A coyote is a dog, right? How many stray dogs have been shot with this caliber in the past 100 years?

And to those who posted the garbage in regards to "my buddy" shot deer with this caliber...well I have no comments on that, except: Don't post it here.

I shot a couple out west in my teenage years while hunting south of Calgary. Used my Dads Cooey bolt action 22lr with a fixed 4x scope. Shot one at 40 yards looking straight at me. Plunked him right between the eyes, he never so much as twitched. Just fell in a heap, the other was maybe 50 yards and broadside to me. Shot him in the boiler room. He dropped, twitched a few times and expired. The 22lr is an effective little round......barely deadly??? As Homey D Clown would say " I don't think so!!"

I'm guessing a human is tougher than a coyote and I don't think there are many people who would want to get shot by a .22, or anything else for that matter.

At 50 or 60 yards the 22 LR is deadly on yotes. At 100 plus yards it just will not do the job. Neither will the 17 HMR beyond 100 yards. When I have to cull coyotes within a mile or so of town limits I prefer to use my 22LR, loaded with Stingers. Beyond a mile from town I shoot them with a 22-250 or a 243. The centerfires drop them dead in their tracks, the rimfires usually let them run for 50, 100 or more yards before dying. I have been doing this for a few years and I don't pretend to be a marksman, but I ain't a piss poor shot either. The rimfires just don't have the energy to humanely put down a dog beyond a hundred yards. Coyotes are tough animals, and I hate to see any animal suffer, even if it is just a coyote.

.22lr and shotguns is all ive used never had one run too far after taking a .22lr to the heart dont need to be a marksman just have to beable to hit a target maybe the size of a pop can bottom at say 50 yards

stingers dont shoot well in the cooey it was not really made for really fast stuff but what ive been doing is using the same ammo i plink with and hunt small game with i dont stick to any one brand but what shoots good

I started using stingers out of my Winchester 52b on silhouettes out to 100 yards due to the fact i could hit them with regular rounds but they wouldn't fall over,Now when i go to a shoot everyone is all of a sudden using stingers:sok2 Moral of this story is if you want to win shooting competitions, hide the type of ammo you are using:sniper:

I know of a couple of hundred cattle that would argue that a 22 lr is extremely effective within the shooters limits.

I think he's talking about the POI change you see with the faster 22lr ammo.

nope grouping wise alot of guns dont like stingers more modern stuff may work better but i know the old cooeys dont like them remeber these rifles where made for the wax lubed ammo that mostlikey was only pushing 1200fps all i use is standard velocity stuff
