Commander slide on a gov't frame - worthwhile? Advice?

Hi guys,

Need some advice, and couldn't locate a similar discussion thread.

I've been thinking of having one frame with multiple slides/calibers (without having to change frame internals every time). A GSG .22 top end works on the Norc Gov't .45 frame (with a lighter hammer spring), so I thought I'd expand the convertibility to 9mm (cheaper than .45 & more bang than .22)...I found a 9mm Commander top end, and I'm not sure if I should go ahead and buy it.

So, I've spoken to a couple guys that know more about this stuff than I do, and they tell me I shouldn't bother because the smithing and alterations required to make a 9mm Commander slide work on a .45 government frame. I've been told that in addition to the dust cover alteration (which will leave it looking funny), the extractor will need to be replaced. Was told a .40cal extractor would work with both 9mm and .45 slides, but after that, it should be good to go.

Is it worth it to do all this to have a frame that accepts three different slides (9mm, .45, .22), or should I buy separate guns? Is there more to it than what I've been told..??

Btw, I can buy a new 9mm 1911 for $330...

ANY guidance would be appreciated, thanks! :)

Was looking at complete slide assy, but not being much of a 'smith, I don't know enough about necessary adaptations and it seems like it's just not reliably possible to make all three work from one frame - or I suppose it would have been done commercially by now.

The 9mm commander top-end will work on the .45 frame.
The ejector is changed, not the extractor.
There is no need to modify the dust cover for functionality.
It is possible to make all this work.
I have done a dozen or so different combinations.

IMHO...You would be better off using the GSG .22 top end on the .45 frame.
And simply buy a Norinco NP-29 or similiar for 9mm.

2 cents Eh!

As Halger said.

Make sure you have a complete top, with plug, spring and rod as there is less room in a Commander slide.
