I'm looking for comments on a 260REM. I found a used rifle......dont want to give much more that right now. I already have a 243 and 270WSM within close caliber +/- sizes from the 260REM.

Would this be a good upgrade for my sons from a 243 for deer...or another good predator rifle to have? What bullets sizes for reloading/powders that have given good results?

If I purchase it it will definately add to my collection of rifles I like.:D

Thanks for the input.

260 Rem

I shoot 6.5x55swede and I doubt there is 10 cents difference between it and the 260. I favour 129gr bullets for deer although there's nothing wrong with the 140's either. Recoil is downright pleasant and easily handled by teens and womenfolk. The effect on deer is something like a lightning strike. Reloader 15 is a good place to start. Unless the rifle is a complete dog you won't regret buying it. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on moose at sensible ranges either. Cheers

I just had a 260rem built, but I am waiting for it to arrive. I intend to use it for a pronghorn/wolf/coyote rifle, with some target use as well. I had considered the 243win, but the 260 handles heavier bullets, there is a better selection of high BC .264" bullets, and the 260rem enjoys a much longer barrel life than the 243win.

makes most cartridges between 243 & 270 Win pale in comparison. Hard to beat for a medium size game hunting rifle

I think the 260 is a good upgrade from the 243. Scandinavians have been taking moose with 6.5's for years. With a 130 grain TSX (my pet load), it's great foir deer, black bear and with reasonable ranges and shot presentation I'd take an elk or moose with that load. You can load 140 grain bullets too if you're wanting to go after moose or elk. Barnes also makes a 100 grain TTSX and this would be awesome for deer and 'yotes. As for varmints, I think the 6.5 might be a bit much if you want to preserve the hide, but it's ok if you're not concerned about hide damage. It should be good for youth to shoot.

I like my 260. 120 and 130 grain bullets have given me best results, very accurate. I find that my rifle likes H4831, H4350 and RL 19. My COL is basically 'fit the mag well' and if that's too long, off the lands so loading is not too picky. Most of the loads in my Rem M700 are sized to just fit in the mag well.

It's hard to beat the ballistics of a good 6.5 bullet. Driven at the appropriate velocity a 6.5 bullet has better ballistics than a 300 Win Mag at 1000 yards. Though you're taking game not punching paper so perhaps my opinion has no bearing here. Just my 2 cents worth. I have several 6.5s but now want a 243. Nothing wrong with that calibre at all.

Just had Bill Leeper put one together for me on a Sako 75 action, with a shilen tube. It is a light contour and .540 at the muzzle, but still shoots tight groups consistently. Built it for deer and coyote, loving it so far!:D

Guntech build mine on a Remington 700 action and it is a pleasure to shoot. Used a
Shilen #4 countour at 24 inches. I still have to take it to the limit.

Thanks everyone for the help/input. For a bit more info its a Sako m75 Greywolf.

How long of a barrel on your rifle blargon?? I'm debating on whether this rifle is a "NEED" or I wait a bit to build another project rifle based off a Sako m75 rifle again. If its a need, then it will be a FAther's Day gift to myself!!

I thought for in the futre with my 2 boys that having a 260REM would be good as then they would not be fighting over the Sako m75ss 243.

i load 120 gr ballistic tip in my wife's model seven
Load is 46.5 gr H4350 for 2935 fps out of her 20" barrel
Kills deer like lightning.
Before i starter reloading we tried 140 corelokt
Accuracy was great but at 2550 fps muzzle velocity internal damage
Was very poor, the bullet penciling thru

i found the 260 rem just a breath under powered. i went with a 6.5wsm and its a bit too much. someone needs to ballon the 6.5x55 staightne those walls add a shaper should but keeping it shorter then a 30-06 but have it running at 60-000 cpu. then the 6.5 will take off. oh wait is that called a 6.5 284??

How long of a barrel on your rifle blargon??

This load is just a hair under 3200fps...

I had thgought about a 260. But opted for a 6.5x284 instead. Used a 243/26" Ruger #1 barrel and had Ron Smith rebore and rechamber it, including an octagon job to lighten the barrel. What a shooter that rifle turned out to be. With an 8.5" twist it handles any
140gr bullets with a one hole three shot accuracy. I also installed a Kepplinger single set trigger. Killed two deer with two shots last fall. Will try some tipped 120gr Barnes for Antelope if I get a draw.

Wow! What a beauty rifle, blargon! I hear all +'s for the 260. Got an M77 stainless in walnut in 260 (was a canoe paddel stock). Gotta get to shoot'en it pretty soon.
