It was mentioned that a commercial off the shelf rifle would be cheaper then a custom build from scratch so tell me any good precision rifles chambered in 30-06 out there ??

Also one more question, I've looked around at bullet twists and thats one thing I have not decided on, anyone with experience can recommend what barrel twist to use for the 30-06Spring with 175gr Match Kings ??

"...I have not decided on..." With a commercial rifle you don't get any choice in twist. You can have 1 in 10 or 1 in 10. That will work just fine with 175 grain Matchkings though. Mind you, if you plan on shooting matches with it, you'll want a heavy barrel. That limits your choices to a hunting weight barrel or buying a custom barrel in .30-06.

i would recommend you take a serious look at 308 the 700p is good same with the savage if you can afford grab a AI or steyr

Don't know much about twist or anything.....but the Tikka T3 Varmint comes in 30-06 I believe, they are supposed to be very accurate as well, heavy barrel.

I really like the 30-06 for hunting (and have one of my own) but if looking for a precision rifle I would take the advice of the guys on here and go for a 308 in Rem 700P, LTR, VSF. Loads of aftermarket add-ons available also. (I'm in the process of picking up one of these rifles very soon)

I'm not a savage man but the new ones with removable clips seem to look o.k.

Wouldn't an older remington 700 Sendero in 30-06 be a good place to start?? You could upgrade to no end and you already get a great starting point with a heavy barrel and an HS stock.

Thanks for all the replies.

canucklehead,

There are a few reasons I'd like to go with the 30-06, alittle bit more of a speed boost, can shoot heavier bullets, and I've always liked the 30-06Spring. Nothing wrong with the 308Win or 300Win Mag but I'd like to get something "inbetween" both of them so to speak and the 30-06 is that round. :)

sunray,

1 in 10 will work which is the standard, Good to know thanks! :D

bigdawg & dinsdale & jennis

I want it in 30-06 for a few reasons I've mentioned it above, my "precision" rifle want out of this rifle is so I can kill 2 birds with one stone, this will be my go to hunting rifle first and formost. :)

heiko,

Yup Remington's have a lot of after market parts. :)

eltorro,

Not in a position to buy the rifle yet, heck they seem to not be hiring in Southern Ontario any machinists (industry here is slow right now) so I couldn't even if I wanted to as I've got a student loan debt and no job to pay it off right now. :(

Barks,

Thanks I forgot about the heavy barreled Senderos that were made, thanks for that tip! :)

go to hunting rifle?

tikka t3 in 30-06.

the 308 a good round for hunting though, and the t3 has it.

You'll save money with a t3 in the long run imo.

If your heart is set on the 30-06 and don't mind a bit of rifle weight, find a sporterised P17 Enfield (BSA versions are usually the best - cost around $150 at gunshows). Timney trigger if you don't want to tune the orig (work great actually), with a quality barrel installed will cost less/about the same as a new Rem, Tikka, and Savage in 30-06. Shoot better too. Bevan King barrel and install will get you in the 1/2 MOA range. A BR match barrel like a Gaillard, Smith will shoot better but then I would want a different action if making that type of investment.

You might even find the orig sporterised barrel to shoot accurately enough. I have owned several and almost all have shot sub MOA at LR. Incredibly accurate considering most still carry WWI era barrels. With trigger and a bit of stock work, you could have a nice plinker/hunting rig for around $200/300.

Consider a heavier contour like a #6 to 7.5. 26" long if you don't mind a longer pipe in the bush. You should end up with a rifle that weighs 10lbs and you can go as heavy as you want.

Stocks are available if you don't want to modify the orig (easy to do and dirt cheap).

Parker Hale Midlands also work well and their trigger is not bad as it comes. Mausers are another low cost choice. Not building match rifles here but accurate hunting rifles that can also do well on paper.

It has been mentioned many times for you to consider the 308. Because it is so common, lots of inexpensive rifles that shoot well. The Savage 12FV for around $600/700 is the best bang for your buck but only comes in the 308. Almost a match accurate rifle (1/2 MOA or better) and more then enough cartridge to go 1000yds.

The difference of 100fps doesn't really increase ballistic performance much beyond 600yds so the slightly faster 30-06 doesn't offer much more in real world shooting either hunting or target.

If bigger is what you want and are going to reload, consider the 30GIBBS. Now you are talking tangible increase in performance. But a change in cal would offer so much more.

Not too sure yet, wait till I have the money to spend and I make a snappy decision at that time but I'm starting to lean on the idea of a 300Win Mag as a Precision rifle and will get the 30-06 as a hunting rifle at a later date. :runaway:

Thoughts ??

I hear you. One reason I moved from SW Ontario. The other would be that it snowed here last weekend ;). Living in SW ON, my air conditioner ran non stop and my dehumidifier as well.

I got a Savage 10P recently and I can say it shoots wa better than me. (about 600$ on WS opening day :bigHug:)
