Compact 9mm pistol recommendation

I have come to appreciate my G-19, which I purchased just so I could bad mouth it with first hand experience and list a bunch of reasons why the 1911 is better. As it turns out the Glock does one thing the 1911 doesn't do, which is provide you with a reliable out of the box gun that you can put in a holster and stake your life on without a 4-500 round break in or spending an extra grand and 6 weeks with a gunsmith for the extras you can't live without. Once a 1911 is correctly set up, there's nothing better, but if the idea is to walk into a store and walk out with a pistol on your belt that you can protect yourself with, the Glock wins. The first G-17 I was exposed to was terrible, the trigger was so heavy it made my hand hurt, and this jaded me against the brand for a log time, but the triggers on these newer pistols are hard not to like, and I've never experienced a stoppage with it. If I was going to complain about anything its that for some reason my trigger finger drags along the inside surface of the trigger guard and gets tender after extended shooting sessions. If compactness is your primary aim, a single stack gun has a slimmer profile so a Glock 48 is where I would look.

My experience was the opposite. SAM Thunderbolt is 100% reliable out of the box. Never did a thing to it, never had a failure with all types of ammo, wolf, win brb, truncated cone, hollow points, 185 gr, 230 jacketed, plated, washed or cast lead. It has just been amazing.

My G21 right out of the box, was meant for 230 jacketed factory ammo, and has a brass to face issue that is very common judging by the you tube videos. The gun is very nice. The service was great, two emails and parts were sent under warranty. But it is picky, has a lot of caveats and needed a lot of fiddling to get right. Once its setup it runs great, but the width of scenarios it runs well is narrow compared to the 1911.

Both great platforms, just pointing out that anecdotal evidence can really vary from unit to unit.

ive got a Ruger SR9 and its a great thin pistol.
ive got a M&P 9C and its maybe too small.
i have a Glock 19 gen3 but i hate the finger grooves.
i picked up a G19X and i really like that but its kinda teetering on being too big for a small pistol.
i just ordered a G48 as they just came out today and im kinda thinking this will be what im looking for - G19 size but thinner with the single stack.

You'll love the 48
I've had mine for a month and put about 500 rounds through it.
One stovepipe on the first magazine and has run flawless since then.
My splits and draw times are just as fast as with my Glock 19 now. And it's just as accurate too.
Really perfectly sized for me, I've got pretty small hands.
I got it with the Glock factory night sights, which I am growing to like quite a bit.

One of the coolest little compacts is the H&K P7M8 and M13.

They are rather heavy weight wise being full steel frame and slide, not light on muzzle flip, and of course no longer made, but extremely well made and very unique.
Not so long ago they were reasonably affordable, but have climbed in value as collectors have snapped them up.
If you have deep pockets, they are worth sourcing.

I’ve No affiliation with this EE sale:

I had 3 at one time. Now I'm only down to one hard chromed one.

The foolishness of youth I suppose.

I just bought this 12(6) off the EE. SW 3914 Ladysmith. 25 oz, single stack 8 round 9mm DA/SA.

I think that this is one of the smallest 9mm pistols we can legally own in Canada.

Harry Callahan, that Benelli a beautiful piece of functional art. I suspect it's super accurate and very ergonomic.

It’s indeed very accurate, with it’s fixed barrel it’s nearly as accurate as my P210-6 at 25 yards. The trigger is also surprisingly good.

The aesthetics are pure Italian and it shows. Looks like it was drawn by Sergio Pininfarina himself.

I thought about getting one of these as I had a S&W 469 back in the day and this would be more compact than the 469. I liked the 469 but found it a bit too "fat" with its double stack mag. It also had a horrendous DA trigger pull and I ended up straight trading it to an OPP member for a new S&W 686 2.5" snub. We were both happier after the trade.

Go with the PPQ Navy and have the barrel cut to 106MM. That is where I would go and might. The gun would fit for IDPA Compact Carry Division and would be about the smallest legal pistol allowed up here in Trudeau Ville.

Take Care

Bob

As soon as the June madness passes I'll be sending my Glock 19 to Blackbox customs for some stippling, trigger guard undercuts, finger groove removal and maybe a blessing from a priest if they offer that too.

The other option is to order 106 mm barrel from Jarvis, buy a 4" PPQ from Irunguns, they will switch the barrel for you prior to importing to Canada.

The old compact all metal pistols from the 90's have a lot more soul than the plastic guns today. Although I will concede modern 9mm's are much smaller.

Compact 9mm's....
