I have come to appreciate my G-19, which I purchased just so I could bad mouth it with first hand experience and list a bunch of reasons why the 1911 is better. As it turns out the Glock does one thing the 1911 doesn't do, which is provide you with a reliable out of the box gun that you can put in a holster and stake your life on without a 4-500 round break in or spending an extra grand and 6 weeks with a gunsmith for the extras you can't live without. Once a 1911 is correctly set up, there's nothing better, but if the idea is to walk into a store and walk out with a pistol on your belt that you can protect yourself with, the Glock wins. The first G-17 I was exposed to was terrible, the trigger was so heavy it made my hand hurt, and this jaded me against the brand for a log time, but the triggers on these newer pistols are hard not to like, and I've never experienced a stoppage with it. If I was going to complain about anything its that for some reason my trigger finger drags along the inside surface of the trigger guard and gets tender after extended shooting sessions. If compactness is your primary aim, a single stack gun has a slimmer profile so a Glock 48 is where I would look.
My experience was the opposite. SAM Thunderbolt is 100% reliable out of the box. Never did a thing to it, never had a failure with all types of ammo, wolf, win brb, truncated cone, hollow points, 185 gr, 230 jacketed, plated, washed or cast lead. It has just been amazing.
My G21 right out of the box, was meant for 230 jacketed factory ammo, and has a brass to face issue that is very common judging by the you tube videos. The gun is very nice. The service was great, two emails and parts were sent under warranty. But it is picky, has a lot of caveats and needed a lot of fiddling to get right. Once its setup it runs great, but the width of scenarios it runs well is narrow compared to the 1911.
Both great platforms, just pointing out that anecdotal evidence can really vary from unit to unit.
