Compact brush/forrest rifle options? (White tail)

My bush gun is a 1894 44 mag, 10 shots in the tube, 265gr cast gas check at 1700fps, 2" groups at 100 with iron sights, short, compact, light, cycles fast as lightning and feeds slick as snot. My "flying trash can" big meplat cast bullets will put a serious thump on anything they hit. I Can't think of a better setup for 100yards.

Out of your price range but the RFB is the best brush gun ever, nothing shorter available in a 308 and it is a semi.

Wow thanks guys for all the input! Great suggestions out there..

Based on your reccomendations I am VERY tempted towards the Lever 30-30 at this point. Side eject port for scope mounting would be amazing.

So of the bunch of levers, which ones are the go-to for smooth lever operation, easy bullet insertion and safe "no accidental discharge" operation?

H&R/NEF handy rifle...
Works well for me.

Yes sir... I agree! My Handi .357 Maximum Mannlicher or my BC Mannlicher .44 Rem Mag are excellent bush carry's... And they can both shoot! I run 180 SSP's in the Maxi and 240 WC cast in the 44 RM... They put a thumpin' on whatever they hit.

i have a 444 marlin, 44 ruger carbine and 405 winchester for bush guns. i've been doing a lot of looking into the 35 remington (marlin lever) as apparently it is a fabulous deer cartridge and won't beat you up. i would give that cart a good look, google it and you will find glowing reports.

Why would you want to scope a brush gun?

For a brush gun?

To me brush gun means close, moving targets. This translates into short and quick loading IMHO.

Fumbling with a single shot reloading and that deer is gone if you don't make that first shot perfect. I appreciate the option of a quick second shot.

After 40+ years of deer hunting in the woods, it is my opinion that 1) You rarely get more than ONE good shot and, 2) It is best to make that one good shot lethal.

The less you are thinking about a follow-up shot, the better your odds of not needing one... And Handi rifles carry "almost" as nice as a 94.

marlin sounds like what you are leaning toward side in side out most all newish ones were drilled for scope mounts they were always a slick action mine you in resent years things have changed

Normally I think lever when I think brush gun. I would not put a scope on a brush gun either. I know it's not a lever, but my 18.5" barrelled 1942 husky 6.5x55 with Williams peep sight, ramline stock and timney trigger makes a very light, quick handling, cheap and very sturdy little setup. Don't forget the crf.

One of these:

Original style, tang safety Ruger M77 International, .308, 6 1/2 lbs without scope, 7 1/4 with, used ones turn up on EE fairly regularly, tend to run from $650-750 without glass. Action is short and slick, and I would be willing to be serious money that I could keep up to anybody using a .30-30 lever putting 5 rounds on target. Trigger is also much better than on my pre-64 94.

Any carbine or lever action rifle will fit the bill. As most of my hunting is bush hunting where long shots are few and far between, I favor something heavier than 30.30 and I have absolutely no use for a scope. In heavy bush, all you will see is leaves. My largest trophy Whitetail I shot at less than 100 feet away. A scope is not conducive to fast shooting or heavy bush shots, IMO.

It has been my experience that if and when you need a quick second shot it is great to have it available.

If you like to handicap yourself with a single shot thats ok but if one has limited time to hunt and wants to collect venison more that engage in a hunting challenge then a fast repeater will be useful.

With a single shot I may have got one wolf. With my lever action I got two.

Esp a Model 94.

I don't and never will own a lever action... But to me a brush gun means quick target aquisition and light and compact... Scope means no quick target aquisition (especially for those that want a second shot)... I can work a bolt almost as quick as a lever and they are way more reliable... I'd go with a rem model 7 or a ruger compact with open sights...
