Hey yall!!
Really wishing at this point I was legally allowed to own an m&p shield...
Looking for a compact pistol that's good for the wife to train on and get used to while I'm out of town working.
Does the m&p come with an extended barrel for us up here the true north or would you guys have any other experience with something else I can look into? The wife has never shot before so I would like to take her for some.training shortly before I am deployed.
Thanks a bunch in advanced

I know guys that was probably a stupid question or way to put it but I want to spark a conversation and see what is out there.
I could research for hours but I would rather hear from other members with wife's who... don't, entirely accept the whole "gun culter" and to see what you guys have started your girlfriends/ wife's on.
We have kids so she is all up in arms about it but is starting to become more understanding.(took a lot of "what if this happend" senerios) I shouldn't push it on her, and I don't, but I would like to know she could handle it if something were to ever arise. After talks I think she would to.
So.. guns for wife's who have never shot. Recommendations?
I guess I could always stick her on my Beretta 92

If your wife is really not into guns and wants to learn something simple, may I suggest a .38Spl or a .22LR revolver? The recoil is mild. The single action is light. Weight is good and you can source smaller grips for her hand ( assuming she has smaller hands).
The manual of arms is also simpler than a semi-auto. Something like a K-17 or a M-19 S&W.
The problem with a 92 FS is the girth of the grip and the weight of the gun. The problem with smaller guns is more felt recoil and that usually encourages flinching and other bad habits in newbies.

Why compact? I did some intro to pistol nights at one of the clubs I belong to. Several of the women that attended did not like the Glock 17 and they felt it was hard of their hand. The Sig P226 with E2 grip was popular due to its smaller size making reaching the magazine release and decocker easier. The Walther PPX was also popular, probably the most popular as there is no decocker to deal with. All are 9mm and ammo used was American Eagle 115 gr FMJ. Other than the Glock no complaints about recoil.

The Sig P220 with Hogue grip proved to be too large for many with smaller hands so only a couple used it. Some also tried a 1911 but it wasn't mine so I never got any feedback on it. No one in our group has any S&Ws so I can't comment on them.

Is there anywhere you can rent pistols? It can be expensive but she can try a variety and possibly avoid buying something that won't be suitable.

My wife has no issue with shooting my full size M&P 9mm.
Select the right size back strap for her and she will be fine.
Alternatively, as Still alive suggested, a .38 revolver is another good choice to start with.

Sig P239 is a compact gun that shoots better than most full sized guns. It's sized for smaller hands. HK P7M8 would fall into the same category.
Irunguns is shipping Glock 43 with extended barrel. A 1911 commander or CCO in 9mm with thin grips and short trigger would also work nicely for smaller hands.

Double stack guns that are good for smaller hands include Walther PPQ or P99AS. I am quite partial to HK P2000 but those are hard to get, the P30 or VP 9 has adjustable grip inserts.

The ultimate compact gun that is canada legal without an ugly extended barrel would be the boberg but that is a unique design with complex internals.

If she is a beginner consider a ruger sp 101 and load with .38 special.

Let her decide what fits her hand the best. My wife has small hands, but likes to shoot large frame/gripped handguns. She likes her S&W 586 6" with target grips the most.

The G19 gen 4 with 106mm LW barrel is pretty compact and it is awesome to shoot... JP.

I see that Lever Arms still has the TT33 in stock, at $189.00

Smallish, slim, dirt cheap...

Glock 19 for me. But go to questar. They can get the m&p compact for you. They also can get the glock 26. Irunguns currently has glock 43 and glock 26 in stock.

technically you could try to get a canadian legal barrel from states, have it installed in states before importing into Canada. however, not only it's very expensive, but also the gun will look ugly as hell because even on the M&P 9/40C, the barrel sticking out pretty far. the shield is a even smaller gun, 106mm barrel just looks awful.
I would say for lighter recoil, glock 19 is a good choice, m&P 9c is good too. IRUNGUNS sells them both with canadian barrel from time to time(G19 GEN 4 is in stock on the Canadian site right now). so save hassel on import.
other choices are G26(same from IRG), but again ugly long barrel. I personally have G30S GEN4 with threaded barrel, but not sure your wife will like the recoil as it's noticeable different from 1911 and other full size 45ACP pistols.

The Shield is small, but shoots full power ammo. The recoil won't help her shoot well and enjoy the experience.

My wife learned to shoot a revolver. She can load it and #### it and shoot it accurately. easy to learn and shoot.

My wife is very small so i started her on .22's. I prefer the ones that are not target pistol types. I have the Beretta 71, Ruger SR22 (Better for my wife since its ambedextrous and shes a lefty), and Ruger Bear cat (she likes this one a lot). I also have a Sig P239 that i let her shoot but didnt think she would like as much. Turned out she wouldnt give it back. Its good because its slim and heavy so it takes up the recoil. Her favorite gun in my collection though is my youth model Henry Lever action in .22lr.

I would definitly steer clear of small plastic 9mm's and bigger as they will be snappy, although some times thats fun too (like my .357 was).

I had to buy another pistol because the wife kindly claimed my Glock17... So I bought her her own G17. She is 5'4"/5'5" average size. With no backstraps it fits her perfectly

If hand size is the issue, our P1S might be an option. It's got a smaller grip circumference than the full size K100 grip although the finger groove base pads still allow me to have a full three fingers on the grip. Felt recoil is uncharacteristically light for a compact.
