If you want your wife to hate shooting pistols forever, get her a shield. I have shot lots of small pistols and none of them are particularly enjoyable with the exception of my old P238.

Get her a slim full size pistol and let her practice.

Find an sd9ve that's local and take the wife in the try it out. Don't buy anything without her wrapping her hands around it first. I've been impressed with how compact and comfortable my SD9Ve had been and affordable too but the trigger pull is too heavy out of the box for some people. If she likes how it points in the gun shop the trigger can be lightened up with an apex kit.

If she is nervous at all about firing 9mm or larger don't push her or you'll turn her off shooting altogether. My wife wont go anywhere near my 9mm so she mostly shoots my S&W 617 22lr, which she loves but she has said the 6" barrel gets to be a little much for her to hold up after a while. For that reason alone I wish the 617 also came in 4.25" even though I love the 6" model.

On that note. Perhaps an Alfa Proj aluminum model with 4.5" barrel 38spc or 22wmr/22lr convertible. I have a 6" steel convertible and love the cheap practice (lr) and when desired more punch from the wmr. Or even go the 38spc for more punch but still less recoil than 9mm. These are the only calibers that they offer in aluminum. Go with the 4.5"not the 6" I got. I wanted the 6" for accuracy.
