I'm looking at the Remington SPS Compact or a Remington Model 7 for my son. The web site doesn't indicate the difference. Also, the website for the standard SPS and the compact are the same so what makes it a compact?

The m7 will have a light contoured 20" barrel, and the action is about 1/2" shorter yet has the same magazine length. The 700 will weigh more, and be longer but has more aftermarket accessories offered.

I personally am a fan of the m7 but many prefer the 700. Go have your boy handle both and see what fits him best.

I've had a number of both, and always preferred the fit and balance of the light 700's like the Mountain Rifle over the Model 7.

You don't say how old or big your son is; I'm huge at 5'6" and around 170lbs if that helps.

The 700 compact is actually quite heavy, probably close to 3/4lbs heavier than the Model 7.

I like to shoot hand loads in the 308 one of my favourite old loads is a 200 grain load. My model seven can handle it but its pretty tight. The only reason I mention this is because on a couple of occasions I had a bullet get hung up around the feeding ramp, it wasn't a very big deal I just gave it a few good wiggles with my thumb and everything was right again.
I recently sold my 700 varmint with out a doubt it had a slightly longer magazine from the back of the mag to the front of the loading ramp. My point being it was always much easer to load the magazine and never had a hang up.

Unless your 700 short had a aftermarket extended mag box, it was exactly the same length as the model 7.

It could very well be that your right, The 700 was purchased used at epps a few years back, the previous owner did some trigger work to the rifle prior to my purchasing it used off the shelf so it's possiable that they also did some work on the magazine box but I don't really know, as far as this is concerned I didn't even know that a longer custom box could be purchased for the short action 700.
I only bought the rifle thinking that it would be fun to use for beaver but the novelty quickly wore out. I went back to my cz 22 magnum. I shoot a lot of beavers but not in such a way that required required a heavy barrelled 308, the vast majority of my beaver hunting happens at fairly close range
