just curious as i dont see many hunting dogs in the photos but do any of you stalk big game with a companion dog, like German wirehair pointers? gsp? labrador? english pointers? as a mean of another useful tool... the Nose??

i dont mean other hunting dogs like bailers an hounds etc, which is another kettle of fish.

I miss my best mate so much. looking at hunting photos he is in everyone, he got very terrortorial an become a little too dangerous while i wasnt around,which happened to be alot.
I plan on finding another Mate in the next 12months once i know il be able to fulfil his hunting needs without leaving for periods of time..

In BC its a no no to hunt Ungulates(maybe spelled wrong) with a dog. My dog hates gun shots and I have never gotten her used to it so she has to stay home anyway. Bird dogs are good to go though, had a GREAT one for years, but that was a while ago
 
I take my Airedale puppy out with me. She is only 6 months old so is still a work in progress. They are a fantastic breed - a jack of all trades, although I think they are best on fur. I suggest joining the Traditional Working Airedale Terrier forums. They have lots of great info and that is how I found my puppy.
 
I have a ditch dog that looks to be atleast mostly an english pointer, I was planning on taking him out this fall and see how he does his thing. Not a trainer so he will have to be a natural
 
I hear ya WhelanLad, my German Wirehair pup goes everywhere with me. This coming season will be his third. I have not stalked deer with him by my side, he waits in the vehicle for the opportunity to blood trail. Maybe I'll run him on deer this fall at a buddies farm... We will see...

P.S. I only spent 8 days without a dog in the house when our old Bamma girl passed... Drove 3300 kms round trip to get Nos... A pup in the house sure took my mind off the loss of my old dog... I wish you luck when you feel it is time to find your new hunting partner.
 
If I ever get back to Ontario and occasionally hunting drives, I now have the perfect dog to help me when I'm dogging. I've got him great about gun shots and he has great prey drive.

I have tried hunting grouse with him. He's happy to put them in the air when he gets the chance, but he doesn't really make a great effort to seek them out. Biggest problem though is he gets districted by deer, and the only way to meet back up with him is to wait for him to come home.

I hunt birds and furbearing animals with my Pudelpointers, but hunting big game with dogs is forbidden in Saskatchewan. Wish we could.

Yeah, your feeling me here!! i can sense it.

use your GWP as an air scenter..really good when stalkin deer in thick bush, well anywhere really.
the companion dogs arnt allowed to pursue game ..which is the hardest part of training a dog to smell alot but not run an chase the deer into next week!!

Thanks for kind words regarding finding that new mate... its hard trying to think how He could be replaced.. but im sure when the time comes we will bond into Best mates! :)

I recently lost my basset hound to cancerous tumor in his liver but he was the greatest dog ever. Loved to hunt rabbits with me and would run what ever I put him on. Hed never run deer or coyote unless I told him to over the fresh track. I grew up with labs and beagles then rescued a basset hound (garbage bag in a ditch at 7 weeks old aprox.). He was awesome and it'll be a while but ill get another basset hound for sure. They take up a lot of room on the bed but they'll keep ya warm on leather couches all winter

This. I have 2 terriers now, a Wheaton and a Kerry Blue, but my next will be an Airedale. My brother had one in Alaska when he lived there, great all around dogs. - dan
 
Checking out my photo shows Harley. Sixteen months now and starting to settle a bit. A great little hunter although he likes to keep the birds he fetches. Being in the bush without a dog is just not as much fun. Keeps the bears at a distance too. Mixed feelings on running deer etc with dogs. No problem when the owner has a degree of control, unfortunately this is not always the case and that is when the problems arise. Life is boring without a dog.
 
my 2 beagles are house pets as well as hunters. the only drawback is watchin the kids holding their snacks above their heads. Great pets,hunters and oppourtunists.

My friend has a Wheaton and a fellow who worked in the same building as I used to has a Kerry Blue. Niether of them get to hunt, and the latter is super fat. As you know terriers need lots of excercise.

Here is a picture of my Airedale. As you can see she has the old style coat, which I much prefer.
