Comparing cartridges???

If someone asked me what they should buy to hunt moose with a .243 or a 30/06, the answer would be fairly easy and the reasons would be quite easy to explain.

When someone asks which is better a .270 or a 25/06 it makes me shake my head.

There are so many cartridges that are so similar in their perfomance that they belong in the same "box".

Sometimes one cartridge has a slight advantage over another but to argue that a .338 is a better moose round that a .375 is kind of pointless.
 
Almost like debating the .275 Rigby vs. the 7x57, eh?


But come on Duffy, without all these threads 70% of the fellas on here would'nt have 90% of their post count.
 
I like the African system of classifying rifles as light, medium or heavy. For the most part, argueing the difference between two light rifles is just splitting hairs. The extremes still stand out, but the average is about the same.
 
To me similar cartridges come down to what rifles they are available in. That is where the hair spliting ends. Others it will be how cool the cartridge sounds. Would you rather say 270 or 25-06? Doesn't change what I want, it is the rifle style around the caliber that I am looking for. Some people it comes down to availability of factory ammo if they don't reload or the range. Now for a 243 or 25-06 there is more grains of factory ammo available for the 25-06.

Or he won't stop to chat with you on the Internet about it as he is busy in the real world filling his freezer with Game meat with it. :D
 
IMHO Anyone that writes for gun mags is suspect as to having a rather odd sense in reality when it comes to marksmanship, and Hunting. :rolleyes:

Funny thing is the best shots and most avid hunters I've ever met usually have more guns than they could shoot. The one gun guys tend to be the box of shells a year type. Filling freezers isn't particularily hard.:p

You haven't met the one gun owners I have met. :D

Also they tend to spend the extra money they have on fishing gear, so they are not out of the woods addiction wise. :D
