Comparison of a 44 mag, 454, and 460 s&w.

Howdy all from Texas. I was a member of this board long ago, but lost my info so I reregistered. Thought I would make a first post of a fun comparison I made the other day. I was shooting standard coffee cans filled with water.

1st shot is a 44 mag, from a Ruger Blackhawk with a 6.5" barrel. The bullet is a 240 grain xtp over 11 grains of unique powder.
2nd shot is a 454 casull from a Smith and Wesson XVR with a 8 3/8" barrel. 300 grain JFN Buffalo Bore.
3rd shot is a 460 Smith and Wesson from the same Smith and Wesson XVR. 200 grain Hornady FTP

The 44 mag blew the can apart, the 454 flattened it out, and the 460 blew it to pieces. Hope you enjoy.

They are exotics here. You can shoot as many as you want, all year long, and 24 hrs a day. They are considered a nuisance spiecies here in Texas. I hunt hogs and deer with pistols. I switch between long bows and revolvers.
 
Wow awesome. How far did the can get launched?

The recoil doesn't look like it's affecting you at all. Are the stories of the wristbreaking powers of the might 454 and 460 exaggeration?
 
Makes me want to buy a Super Blackhawk. :)

Which, oddly enough, I've seen for less than ordinary Blackhawks...

The 44 just split the can and kicked it off to the side. The 454 split it in half and flattened it out on the ground. The 460 blew it into a bunch of small pieces.

The recoil is stout. My uncle broke his wrist shooting one of my casulls. I have shot large handguns since I was a kid. I have learned to deal with it and take the recoil with my body. The 454 and the 460 is much more than the 44 mag. I use to shoot a lot of Magnum Research BFRs (big fine revolver) in 444 marline, 45/70, 30/30, and 450. They are pretty snappy when you shoot rifle cartridges in a 8" revolver. I use to have a 450 and my buddies had the other calibers. We hunted with them and shot most weekends. I sold mine to pay some bills back a few years ago. Wish I had it back.

I have two. The super black hawk anniversary edition in 44 mag, that I am shooting in the video, and another in 45 colt. They are excellent guns. And Rugers are built like tanks. I can juice up my 45 colt loads to 44 mag specs with no issue of hurting my gun. You can not do that with many other SAAs in 45 colt. That is why most loading manuals will have Ruger only loads listed in some.

I've just gotten into single actions in the last year. I recently bought my first Blackhawk, in .30m1, and it's an attention getter (especially with ball powder). The only thing keeping me away from the 44 is the thought of having to reload for yet another cartridge!

Have you ever shot a 44 magnum or 45 colt with the Bisley grip? I've large mitts and I've always wondered how one of those would suit me. I've never even seen one in a store to handle, let alone fire.

And the only 44 mag I've shot is a 629 Smith. It was a barn burner with commercial loads, but the guys target loads were quite nice.
 
great vid. I like porkchops, ribs and cornbread, I would love to shoot hogs with a pistol. If my wife or God allows me to come to texas I will bring Canadian beer and hog sauce. we would have a feast. Glad to have you back on CGN. So you can tease us with your stories LOL
 
Any tips for recoil management in those large guns? You said you absorb it with your body.

I have a 9mm but I'm interested in a hand cannon. What should I know first? I don't want to end up like your uncle with broken wrists.

Not meaning to derail/hijack, but you seem like someone who might have some information.
