I think the notion of 308W as an under 1000 yd cartridge stems from the old days, with the 168gr BTHP bullets, which were basically a cr@p combination of weight, shape and BC. We have much more efficient bullets these days.

Maybe for the uniformed, but fullbore and Palma shooters shooters never did use the 168 INTL bullet for long range , it was designed as a 300 Meter International Match bullet.
