An addition to original post - now includes a LMT
So, having more money than sense ( at least according to current and past GF's ) I added a LMT MRP 16 to the mix and thought some of you may be interested in my observations:
Price - Somewhere's just North of the SL8. Around $2500 will get one into your lunch hooks. Not as pricey as the Swiss but not a cheap rifle either.
Fit and Finish - Best I have seen on any AR. Easily comparable to the Swiss and SL. THe upper and lower lock together like the proverbial bank vault. No accuwedge needed here. If you didn't actually know it was a two part setup you would be forgiven for assuming it was one solid receiver. The Monolithic Rail Platform adds to the sense of solidity and, of course, allows for an endless game of 'Leggo for Guys' for those so inclined.
Accessories - Well, being an AR, you are only limited by your personal imagination and your bank manager's good nature. Current config is limited to a front vertical grip and (unlike the attached pic ) a Falcon 1.5x5 30mm tube.
Accuracy - I haven't performed precise measurements ( soggy targets etc ) but, when fitted with an Elite 3200 10X Tactical, mine is able to repeatedly produce 5 shot groups in what are eyeballed as just under 2.0 MOA range at 100. Using the handload of 69g SMK over 25g Varget I have shrunk these to just outside 1.5 MOA. This is comparable to a run of the mill hunting rifle but is very good for a gas gun IMO. Note though that this rifle seems picky with ammo - seems OK with cheap American Eagle 55g and 62 g but does not like Winchester White Box 55g nor Remington's UMC 55 gr. With both those loadings accuracy deteriorated markedly. No cycling problems, but an accuracy drop off for sure.
Handling - The longer barrel and the MRP means a tad nose heavy handling. From a bench this is (of course) not an issue but offhand I actually prefer my Norc M4gerys handling.
Biggest Pro - I love the stock - a SopMod - it really allows for a good cheek weld and, not that recoil is an issue with .223/5.56, it does totally absorb recoil. A secondary pro is the very ergonomic grip. An additional down-the-road benefit is the apparent ease with with one can make a barrel swap.
Biggest Con - Well I guess I have to say price. This is a lot of cash to spend on a range-only gun. The biggest practical con though is probably the slight nose-heavy feel ( easily mitigated, I guess, with a 14.5 barrel ).
Should you get one ? Well, I have to say if you are new to the AR stuff then 'probably not'. In that case, get a Norc and shoot the proverbial out of it to see if you like the platform. If you have already settled on the AR as what you want, and you can afford an LMT, then the answer would be a 'for sure yes'. In the around 30 years that I have been shooting M16/AR15 type rifles I would say that this is one of the most solid and well made ones I have seen and used.
What does it look like:
Hope you enjoyed the update.
Cheers,
Bob.
