Compensators w/ breacher teeth, etc, what's it like..

..to actually use them? I have no reason or need to have to breach a door, but I'm curious about how these work and are used. Do you load a slug or buckshot in them, put them right up to the weak spot/lock and then fire? That sounds like it could be remarkably uncomfortable and send all kinds of crap back into your face. Sounds like a good bit of discipline and training would be needed to use them appropriately. Thoughts?
 
I have one on my 870 (Remington Breacher Choke), because if I'm bumping it around, or it falls over at the range, that big piece of steel will prevent damage to the muzzle. I remove it and replace it with a proper choke if I'm hunting. I would never want to be near one of those against a door hinge or knob... Must be something less than a slug (as mentioned above).
 
By the book you use frangible rounds for breaching -- metal powder in a wax binder -- site sponsor SFRC used to have some for sale but if I recall that was like a year or 2 ago.
