Competing in the US

Last year, after the Canadian Nationals, I was driving down to the USA. I got refused entry at the US border because my invite was for a match that was more than 4 days from the time that I was crossing. This was the first time I had ever heard of such a rule, and I tried to explain that nowhere on my Form 6 or anywhere on the BATF website was there any such requirement, but to no avail. The guy told me his supervisor said there had been too many people crossing the border with guns recently and they were going to get things under control. It was late, around 11pm (after the banquet), so they couldn't reach anybody at BATF for approval, and in the end just said I had to turn around and go back to Canada.

My point being, that even if you have all of the correct paperwork and all the right invitations, match confirmations and whatnot, they can still come up with a bogus reason to prevent you from entering.

To temporarily import firearms into the US you need a Form 6. The answer to your question is yes you do. You are up against Federal Laws, your CCW permit is a State document.

I have my Form 6 already and all I did was attach a copy of my CCW to get it, I did not have to attach any invitations or hunting licences. My CCW is also good in 25 states through reciprocal agreements (there are a few states that don't recognize non-US citizens with a CCW so the number is probably closer to 20 states).

Bottom line is... You no are no longer required to submit ANY supporting documentation with a F6NIA application.
No hunting license, no match invitation, no letter from your mom.

As Onagoth posted, USBP/DHS can ask for whatever they want in order for you to support your stated reason for entering the USA.
You say you're coming into the US for a shooting competition..?
It's completely reasonable that they may ask you to show them something to support your claim.

'Tell USBP you're going to Chicago to attend a wedding...?
Don't be surprised if your asked to show that invitation as well.

This is not good. I usually go down five days early to visit friends in Seattle before the match. What crossing was this at. Peace Arch or the truck crossing?

Ok I noticed you are in Vancouver so I assumed it was a WA crossing. Last year the officer hardly looked at my papers before he waived me through. I think it depends on who you get and what may or may not be going on in the excited states at the time you cross. One thing for sure they can do what they want so best to have as much paper work as you can. Bad place to go the, "I know my rights" route.

In my last crossing both sides of the border were super nice. The American new more so what to do, and just checked serial# and let me on my way.
The Canadian lady kept asking if it was locked up (NR with bolt removed), and then said she doesn't want to send me in. Then went over one Lane asked him what to do, then she popped my trunk and verified serial # while pulling out my DT in plain view of everyone behind me. Then was waved on, they probably scared the car behind me haha.

Wouldn't we be at a disadvantage right from the start as they can use 20-26 rd mags, and we are shooting with 10's?
What was said above - plus...If IPSC Is your game, USPSA production and limited 10 are limited to 10 round mags and of course, single stack is the same capacity either side of the border.
