I know about NEA, but that's pretty much it.

whom else is out there to consider?

and a pretty important question, who makes magazines to use in an AR chambered in .22LR?

many thanks!

-CMMG and Spike both make complete uppers that mates with a regular AR lower uses Black Dog Mags.
-M&P 15-22 uses a proprietary magazine.
-Walther makes both Colt M4 and HK 416 clones and uses proprietary magazines as well.

because M&P and Walther clones comes in pistol versions, their magazines are limited to 10 rounds only, while CMMG and Spikes are just uppers, so full capacity magazines are legal in Canada.

well, the S&W and Colt aren't quite what I'm looking for. I want something like what NEA, CMMG and Spikes make.

I like the looks of the NEA, just wondering about mags though. a gun with no makes is NOT fun at all! :p

My CMMG .22 upper is metal. I have had 2 15-22 rifles that worked very well but I got tired of the plastic weight and feel compared to my RRA AR-15. Also got tired of the pinned magazines. To be honest the 15-22 rifles were more reliable (with a wider variety of ammo) - the CMMG only likes reasonably good quality HV rounds such as Mini-mags (may be because of the short barrel?) - but it is a lot of fun. Another advantage of a dedicated AR .22 uper is that they are available in a wide variety of styles and barrel lengths.

As far as mags are concerned - the Black Dog mags are OK, and are available in 10,26, 32 & 50 rounds (no pinning required).

The walther clones are all metal and use proprietary mags as well. Also, the barrel is sleeved so not so good for accuracy, at least on the 416. I haven't seen the M4 clone, but I would guess it's the same.

hey TEG, are Black Dog the mags you use or do you prefer something else?

you say they're 'ok', which makes it sound like there is a better option available. ;)

There is no doubt that S&W 15-22 mags are the best. There is even a company in the US (Redi-Mag.com) that builds an adapter to run 15-22 mags in an AR-22. However in Canada, the requirement to restrict them to 10 rounds takes some of the fun away. In my opinion, the Black Dog mags are not as good as S&W 15-22 mags or the Umarex Colt M4-22/HK 416/ Beretta ARX mags, but they are OK and better than the CMMG mags. The 25 round metal lip BD mags have always functioned well for me, but they are made from fairly fragile plastic and all of mine are showing signs of deterioration (cracks and small broken pieces) around the base of the metal feed lips.

I'm not sure I follow the 'requirement' to pin the mags to 10 rounds.

these are rimfire, so unless it's a pistol variant, there should be no round limit. even as an AR platform, the only limit there is if it's centerfire.

am I missing something?

Yes, you are:

There is a pistol version of the S&W M&P 15-22, so all S&W mags for this firearm must be pinned to 10 rounds by RCMP decree.
There is a pistol version of the HK 416-22, so all HK mags for this firearm must be pinned to 10 rounds by RCMP decree.
There is a pistol version of the Beretta ARX 160, so all Beretta ARX mags for this firearm must be pinned to 10 rounds by RCMP decree.
There is a pistol version of the Ruger 10/22, so all Ruger mags for this firearm must be pinned to 10 rounds by RCMP decree.
etc. etc. etc.

So far there is no requirement to pin generic AR-22 mags, such as BDM and CMMG. Also the Colt M4-22 does not have a pistol version so these mags do not have to be pinned (and coincidentally happen to fit the ARX-160 and HK 416-22) Which is why my ARX-160 uses Colt M4-22 mags :d :

okay, well, lets have this thread stick with full sized AR platforms, not the 80% frame S&W/Colt options that exist.

from what you've shared so far, BDM and CMMG are the only one's that make mags?

are the CMMG better than the BDM for the NEA I'll likely buy?

In my experience with 2 different generation one CMMG mags and 2 identical generation 2 mags they are all useless. I recently read that CMMG has discontinued there generation 2 mags because they were so unreliable. I think BDM are the only viable option for an AR-22. The 26 round BDM mags are reliable, they are just not very durable.

CMMG generation one:

CMMG generation two:

There is a third type of CMMG mag that also appears to have been discontinued (I have no experience with this one). It was called the Evolution mag:

No love for the Lakeside RazorBack? Magazines? Nope, belt fed baby! Mine runs like a top, & wouldn't consider selling her. Not a true complete rifle, but an upper with a reduced power hammer spring in your run of the mill AR lower. Tons of fun!

There have been 32 and 35 round magazines available for the S&W 15-22. At least one site sponsor has had them.

One thing I like about the S&W 15-22 with the 10 round magazine is that it reloads are required at the same point as with my AR. Cheap 3 gun practice.

Is the NEA .22 upper available anywhere.

I have an Atchisson MkII .22LR sub-cal, mags run about $30 or so, and are easy to find in 10, 20 and 30rd capacities.

Just remove your BCG, insert the sub cal, and insert a mag, and bang on. These units have been around for a long time.

I own an K&K 416D and it is very accurate. It work like clockwork. its all metal and with the exception of the mag, look and feel like the .223 H&K. Great gun.

regarding the MP 15-22, can you further tacticool it by changing all the furniture and such?

it's a smaller frame, so I'm not sure. it's a bit cheaper than your standard AR, so it would let me get the gun and a whack load of mags.

I's just really like to put wood furniture on, just nost usre it would work on something like the 15-22 :p
